I bought some Mobil 1 last night...

The Mobil 1 0W-40 is what comes in my new SUV, a Jeep SRT8.
6.1L hemi, 420hp/420tq. FAST!!!

They recommend 3K oci's if city driven otherwise 6k.

I thought the M1 was a group IV? Should'nt it last longer
than 3k?

Bill in Utah, I understand where you are coming from, but many people like to run extended drain intervals which Synthetics prove to be superior.

Also, I'm never worried about spending $5qt on oil. It's very cheap. If $30 for 6qts of M1 every 3-12 months (whatever drain interval you chose) is a lot, it's time to get another job.

My wife has mostly done a lot of short trips, since her trip to work is only about 10 miles, although the past few months she's been doing a lot more longer trips than usual. Either way you'd think that Syntec 5w30 would offer better MPG than GC, since it's not only thinner at operating temp, but it's most likely thinner on the cold start too (since GC is a rather thick 68cst at 40c and the Syntec 5w30 is probably closer to 60cst)

I know...they both Castrol oils.

Just Kidding

Seriously, when did you switch it over to Syntec? How much oil is retained in the engine during a change? Maybe it'll take a second OCI to see a change?

I switched it over back in September, when the weather was still warm here, and the weeks after I put it in the temperature stayed roughly the same, so it wasn't as if the colder weather "MPG hit" had taken effect yet either.

I honestly don't think a second run with this oil would show a change in MPG though, because even before I ran GC, when I had Royal Purple 5w30 in there (which you'll recall actually thinned out to a 5w20 in rapid fashion) for a few intervals, it showed the same MPG. And I got the same MPG before RP, when I ran nothing but Mobil 1 5w30 in her engine too. So it seems for her driving habits, her MPG is not affected by the viscosity of her oil. No matter what viscosity, whether it's 8.8 cst or 12.2 cst, she still gets right around 23 MPG every single tankful.

So what did VW do to the 2.0 to make it require such expensive oil?

The 1.8 in my 1986 Jetta just passed 300k miles

and has never seen VW 502.00 oil or such.

I had an 1985 Golf with the same 1.8L engine. It was a blast to drive
cool.gif
. I had it 10 years and 109,000 miles. It had no mechanical problems and didn't burn/use any oil between the 3,000 mile oil change intervals. I used GTX 10w30 here in northern NJ and it ran great. The interior looked brand new even after 10 years. The body started to show some rust due to the salt used 6 months of the year on our roads.

I'm really sorry I sold it. It didn't have AC and being single and older at that time it was "rough" to impress the fairer sex in 90* temps without AC in a vehicle
smirk.gif
.

The older Golf's & Jetta's from the mid 80's seemed to be more reliable and better wearing than their newer counterparts.

The Mobil 1 0W-40 should last 6,000 mi easily. There is some debate about the exact composition of current Mobil 1. Evasive answers by ExxonMobil, indepth analysis, and the Japanese ExxonMobil Website leads many to believe that some current Mobil 1 grades contain Group III.

The 0W-40 is likely all Group IV/V. It meets MB 229.5 for 12,000-15,000 mi OCI so I seriously doubt it will have any problem running 6000 mi OCI in street use in a 6.1 Hemi.

Buster,

The problem is most people (incl BITOG members) don't do extended OCIs using Syn.
nono.gif

Go look in the used oil analysis, read in these forums that they want the "best" for their engines and still change the $5 a quart of oil out 3k, 5k, maybe 7k. (most are 3-5k)

At those OCis Syn is doing nothing for them. It's just wasting money.

I drive 30k a year. 5k ocis times 4 quarts is 24 quarts of oil.

If I spent $5 a quart thats $120 a year. If I spent $2 a quart thats $48 a year.

The bottom line is why WASTE $72 a year on nothing? The engine will not last a bit longer.

Because I care about wasting money on something that does not matter, my cost for 30k worth of oil changes (not incl filter) is between $12-20 a year. (I could not run a OCI using syn that would make it cheaper to run syn over conventional)

About one oil change using your $5 a quart oil.

I don't care what job you have or how much you make..

I guess you and I will disagree on wasting money.
dunno.gif

If they ARE running the extended Ocis (10k or more) or have engines that REQUIRE syn. Then we agree.
cheers.gif

Most do not. Jiffy Lube telling people that 3k ocis with syn will make their engines last MUCH longer than their "normal" oil is a lie. (i was getting the oil changed in the work truck (2006 Toyota Tundra that sees around 20 hours a day idling and 5k ocis) and heard that "sales statement" many times.

Happy New Year! Bill

PS: I STILL want to know what did VW do to the engines to MAKE you spend the $$ for more expensive oil when the 1.8 has proven that under a buck oil works well to 300k and beyond?
hornets_nest.gif

Bill, I agree with you. However, a lot of people waste $$ on a lot of things. It's all relative.

Do you smoke? Eat at restaurants? Gamble, Buy designer clothes , fancy fishing gear, stereo equipment, collectable's, on and on? I am sure unless you are the miser of all misers, you spend money on something that some may consider to be a waste of money. If so...is people using synthetics on short OCI's any worse? Nope!

No.

Eat at restaurants

Not at expensive ones. Not too often too

Gamble

Very little and win most of the time. (never play slots and lottos)

Buy designer clothes

buy black no name jeans and normal shirts. I prob spend $50 a year on clothes. Spend more on boots..(about 2 pairs @ $29 a pair)

Quote:

fancy fishing gear

nope, Same gear for years. Seems to work everytime.

stereo equipment

Nope. Half deaf..

Quote:

collectable's, on and on

Nope and no.

I do own a few firearms but they have increased in value since I've bought them and I enjoy them. Plus they can be sold quickly so since they have value.

That is prob the only thing that some folks would call a "waste" of money.

Spending extra $$ in short OCIs with Syn is wasting $$.

Why do it? I guess I just don't understand why someone would pay extra for things that do not improve something in the end.
dunno.gif

But hey, someone thanks you!

Happy New Year!

Is a 00 VW still under warranty? PP is under $2 after rebate at Kragen in Sacramento.

The car was purchased a CPO vehicle from Sunnyvale VW...and there's a chance that it's still under extended warranty, so it gets the "approved" oil without question.

Patman,
I don't want to sound bad, but 23 MPG for an automatic Civic is bad. She must have a lead foot or do alot of stop & go driving in city traffic.

She does have a lead foot actually!
smile.gif
When I'm the only one driving the car for a solid week, I can always manage to get closer to 30 MPG. In fact I have driven the car more than her in the past week, and the last tankful was 29.4 MPG.
smile.gif
The two previous weeks, with her doing most of the driving, it was 22.9 MPG and 23.7 MPG.

That's another reason why I don't think the wear numbers in her used oil analysis are all that great, she drives it too hard when the engine is still cold (I've seen her go up to 5000rpm when the engine is stone cold)
