…and maybe EV ready for some models too.

Been wanting to do this for a while. I hired an electrician to do the following:

- Install a new 125a subpanel in the garage.

- Relocate the existing 40a a/c breaker and 30a solar system #1 backfeed breaker from the meter/main panel to this new subpanel.

- From the new subpanel, run two pairs of 20A 120V outlets (on separate circuits) and one 50a outlet. I supplied my own Hubbell HBL9450a outlet. Unfortunately he used #6 Romex, but for a 50a circuit, that is acceptable.

Finding someone who was willing to understand the complexity of my setup while being priced reasonably took some time…years. The work is not aesthetically perfect, but for the price, I can clean up any minor deficiencies.

This new setup of two 20a outlets and one 14-50a outlet should be able to handle any Toyota PHEV product. The lower end models max out at 3.3kw for charging (20a outlet required), higher end models with the 6.6kw onboard charger do not take more than 32a, so a 50a outlet is fine.

If I ever buy a full EV, I will probably have to add a separate 60a breaker and hardwire the charger using #6 thhn, but it is very unlikely that I will ever buy one of those.

There should be a menu in the on-board car charging config to limit input current to any variety of choices. 40A, 80% of 50, should be plenty.

Looks and sounds like you are all set.

I’m not an electrician but I am curious about the routing of those wires in the first picture on the left side. They come down the stud then cross over the conduit and then go into the wall. Was that part of the work this guy did?

I have a 14-50 outlet in my garage corner. Just used it to backfeed my panel from my generator during outage. ( Yes i cut the mains off). I run my air compressor with it, and if i had a hybrid or Ev, i could also use it for that. I also power my travel trailer there when needed.

Ready to ROCK! When I am passing through your end of the Bay, I can stop in for a quick charge...
Maybe you need a nice Tesla Wall Charger as well?

The Tesla and Ford "travel chargers" are limited to 32A. Toyota doesn't have any OEM L2 options, you have to go 3rd party. Ideally, I would want at least 48a for a Tesla or Ford EV so that most of the charging is completed between 12am-7am, since that is the cheapest time for PG&E.

The white wires? Those are coaxial cables for the defunct security camera system.

That is the plan:

Might need to install to keep a spare mobile connector around for visitors to use. Elon dropped the cost to $200. I heard there are some Tesla to J1772 adapters available?

There's always 110V

Or an extension cord and a dryer socket adapter..

..which is how I was charging my Volt at my new house before I installed a 240V outlet and sub-panel in my garage.

And how I charged it at my old house, which was easier because the dryer was about 10 feet from the garage.

I think everyone should convert their garage into EV ready especially when you are trying to sell house.
