What model year? If it's a 4spd auto, it's most likely an F4A51 trans. These transmissions require an ATF suitable for Hyundai/Kia SPIII use. They're easy to service. There's a bottom mounted drain plug and you add new fluid through the dipstick tube. I'd first try a drain/fill to see if that helps.
Some of the early models (2001, maybe 2002) had a top mounted spin-on trans filter. If there's no external filter, there's nothing else to service. There's an internal filter that requires removal of the valve body to replace.
Also- do the PRNDL lights on the dash, coincide with the floor shifter? If not, there could be range/mode sensor issues that could cause shifting issues. That's a fairly easy repair to replace the sensor.
