Hyundai Sonata/ Mitsubishi Lancer

Just spent a week in Puerto Rico up in the mountains. We had a rental Sonata and Lancer. The Lancer seemed to handle the very windy roads rather well, but the engine was rather loud sounding and the gas mileage was only so-so for such a small car (the computer was saying 25mpg). The interior felt cheap but overall not awful for a rental.

The Sonata thoroughly impressed my friend and me. It seemed to get the same gas mileage, but it was much more comfortable and bigger. It handled the curves rather well. Just the interesting clicking that I am supposing is from the DI. Seemed to have plenty of power (I never drove this one, only rode it). I even felt comfortable in the rear seat (I am 6'). We decided we would both be interested in this car if we needed a replacement.

Isn't the Sonata a different class of car than the Lancer?

Yep. There were 7 of us and we felt we didn't need the extra size on both cars. If I was looking at a small car, I would've consider the Lancer, but the low gas mileage really turns me against it. It definitely felt impressively solid in the corners, but that was the one strong point.

pretty much the entire mitsubishi (new) line of vehicles are 10 years behind the competition. avoid them unless you can get an amazingly stellar deal.

In both styling and performance. I was looking at a 2012 Galant - I thought how nice it looked for being from the early 00's. It just had that bland look to it.

Honda Accord is no longer SLA front suspension. Is this Progress? Maybe its good to be behind the competition and not bean counted to death, THEN the car may LAST 200K not 120K. Dont want no disi or vtec or vvt or timing chains & tensioners or ABS or TCi or eps or small greenhouse or swoopy rooflines that inhibit interior space.

mE i LIKE THE LOOKS INSIDE AND OUT OF THE oPTIMA much BETTER THAN THE GETTING OLD FAST hYUNDAI MERCEDES CLS RIPOFF.

I banged my head getting into the Sonata and hated the steering.

Let me reiterate, I hated the steering.

My wife is not an automotive enthusiast and she hated the steering.

Everything else? Worked like a charm. Handled about as well as you can expect a car on 65-series tires to handle (through a numb steering wheel with virtually no on center feel). Brakes had a good linear feel (Do you hear that Nissan? LINEAR! Do that to the Altima and I might change my negative opinion of that car) Acceleration was suprisingly good for a 2.4, especially in the midrange. It really felt stronger than it was. Seats were comfy. Controls were mostly logical (although a bit button happy on the steering wheel)I am not a fan of slushboxes in general but this one worked logically with smooth up and downshifts.

If Chrysler had this transmission sorted this well in the Sebring/Avenger, with this variant of the GEMA 2.4, people might have actually bought them.

i am on my third sonata never had a problem with them.two were sixes a 2.7 and a 3.3 my 2010 has the 4cylinter 2.4 great cars but i liked the sixes better.although i get 35 miles a gallon on it.also have a santafe (miss piggy) icall it 23 t0 26 miles per gallon but boy can it move.want to buy a new one but i am waiting for the six cylenders to come out later this year dont think i would like a four in a santafe.

I think the Santa Fe is getting a turbo 4 instead of a V6.

Anyway, I agree that most of Mitsubishi's lineup is disappointing. There is no a mainstream manufacturer can succeed when the only cars that are desirable are special performance models.
