My wife and I just returned from a ten day trip in Germany and I wanted to give my thoughts on our T-Roc rental. I was not familiar with this model and figured it was new but it seems that VW has been selling this small SUV since '17.
Overall impression:
Our car had a 4 cylinder of unknown displacement and a 6-speed MT that was fun to drive. It handled well on Germany's country roads and cruised comfortably on the autobahn at 160. The TFT dash lacked a tach although it may be available in the settings but I didn't have time to mess with that. It was comfortably appointed with everything you would expect from a new vehicle and ours only had 4400km on it when we picked it up. It's a competent but uninspiring car that I think would compete well with the likes of the CRV and RAV4.
Pros:
It was comfortable and I enjoyed driving it and it interestingly had a 240kph speed limit sticker on the dash. I managed to get it up to 200 on the autobahn but just barely. My wife didn't drive it but thought it was comfortable and had an overall positive impression. My sister and her husband had issues with their rental and had to have it replaced. They were impressed enough with ours that they requested a T-Roc as a replacement.
Cons:
My biggest gripe is lack of back seat legroom, I'm 6'-5" and if I'm driving the rear seat is only fit for a small child. I didn't care for the auto stop/start but found that keeping the clutch depressed kept it from activating.
Conclusion:
VW has a well thought out small SUV or CUV here and I am surprised that they do not sell it in the US. It's not great at anything but it does a lot of things well. Fuel mileage was displayed in liters per 100km and my quick math equates it to mid thirties. Here are a few pictures.
