Hyundai : Fuel System Cleaner Statement Every 5K ?

New Hyundai statement in 2017 owners manual (2.4L GDI engine) says to add Techron (or similar) to fuel tank every 5K miles unless using a Tier One gas ... What am I cleaning in a GDI engine ? I use a Tier One gas anyway but intake vales will never see any benefit from Tier One gas or Techron every 5K miles ! Seems like adding a little MMO or TC-W3 to gas to lube the fuel pump and top end would do about the same thing - maybe better ?

Is it DI? If so you'll be cleaning the tank, pump, lines and injectors however it won't touch the intake tract or the valves. UCL is pointless btw, the engine lubricates itself with engine oil.

As Olas commented, there are other components that can benefit from a hit of Techron, including the exhuast valves. Even though you use toptier gas. Techron might be useful now and then to clean up after some detergent additive fuels that could leave some deposits. MMO and TC-W3 could leave some deposits too, over time, that Techron probably would remove.

Put half the techron in the tank and the other half in an inverse oiler to clean it from both sides.

As long as you are running tier 1 gas some sort of cleaner is added. If in doubt, buy Chevron. I sure wouldn't add MMO or TC-W3.

I am new to these engines, just purchased a 11 Sonata with the 2.4L GDI engine.

I intend to go by the severe service with Chevron Supreme motor oil (3750 miles) and OEM filters.

The fill of oil from the dealer stunk like fuel, so there are some fuel dillusion issues going on here.

I bought a dose of techron additive, and will use that every other oil change.

I try to fill up at top tier costco, but don't always make it over there.

Engine also has used about 1/2 quart in 1500 miles of high speed driving (85-90mph). I hope it doesn't consume oil like this regularly.

I've never seen the need for any fuel system cleaner using E10 gas. And that statement has been in every Hyundai manual that I know of. It's a marketing up sell. They also suggest using Quaker State oil too.

Check around the back of you oil pan. I'd bet a buffalo nickel its leaking.

Top Tier gas and a quality approved oil is all you need. The fuel treatment is recommended because the lower tier gas is known to have the minimal standard versus the higher standard of a top tier. If you want to feel warm and snuggly inside you can throw a bottle of techron in every 10k but that wont cause any drastic changes. Stick with what you're doing

I have been using Shell 93-octane exclusively, and I thought that would be enough and there would be no need to use fuel system cleaner. My mpg for commuting to work, all local roads, reduced to 13.5-mpg. I bought Techron fuel system cleaner and poured it into the tank before refueled with Speedway's 93 octane. I didn't use Shell 93 with Techron because I was afraid they might counteract each other. After Speedway's 93 w/Techron emptied, I refueled with Shell 93, and low and behold, I get 16+ mpg on the same local roads. My car is rated 16 mpg city.

I am sold with Techron fuel system cleaner, I will use it every 3000 miles.

I think the shortest interval I would go would be every 10k miles, maybe 5k if I was doing an oil change and it was filthy or abused but certainly not every 3k miles. Too much cleaner can thin the oil.
