After doing a bunch of searching, the new Supertech Synthetic seems to be considered an ok, if not spectacular synthetic. On the other hand, good old Pennzoil yellow bottle conventional is considered one of the best, if not the very best conventional oil.

So my question is, which one would you prefer, if all else was equal?

This isn't meant to be an acrimonious or trolling type thread, just a hypothetical question to try and find out where the overlap is between lower-end synthetics and high end conventionals.

PYB!!

Supertech is essentially MAG1 syn and seems strong both on paper and in the spec's it meets like the GM4718. If it were $11 or $12 like PYB, I'd use it ahead of PYB. But it's not, so I don't.

I wouldn't run either much past 5000~7500 miles, so there isn't much benefit to the "synthetic" aspect of the supertech, at least for me.

The consistency of Pennzoil would have me choose that, or the lack of consistency in Supertech products historically.

Too hypothetical here to matter. Current price of Supertech: $28. Current price of PYB: $11.

They are apples and oranges. If the hypothetical were based on two dinos or, or 2 synthetics, it would have more merit. But this is kind of like asking if, all else being equal, would I buy a Yaris or a Porshe 911 Turbo.

For severe operation, cold starts etc the synthetic will outperform the dino. Just because it says Super Tech on the bottle doesn't mean it's an inferior product.

IF they BOTH were the SAME price?

Pennzoil conventional. I've run both and I like the PYB better. I KNOW that in the end (400,000 miles) the engine will be the same if I ran either.

Rule of thumb here is the longer the approvals and spec list the better the oil. So by that criterion ST wins. By the same criterion so does M1 0w-40 and GC 0w-30 and Total Quartz Platinum 0w-30 win. Me, for now I'll stick with the M1 HM 10w-30 for around 4 bucks a qt at wally world. The M1 HTHS of 3.7(cSt at 150degC) and pour point of -65F says something to me about whats really in the bottle. If I drove like grandma, I'd be happy to run PYB GF-5 in the winter an Shell 5w-30 in the summer.

FWIW....PBY is now on sale at Dollar General for $2.50 a quart. I noticed that they had 5W-30, 10W-30 and 10W-40 on the shelf.

I don't know what price a 5 quart of Super Tech 05W-30 goes for but I know that the quarts at WalMart are almost $4.00 for Super Tech.

My mistake....should have been PYB....thanks for correcting me!

BTW....it is all API...SM...rated oil if people are leery of DG. New Bottle and I don't think "line wash" would be sold by Pennzoil or Shell.
