A hypothetical scenario to see what oil you think is really best. After reading the brief following information, please select your choice. Feel free to provide any scientific, semi-scientific, or seat of the pants / experience reason you would like.

You have added two new cars to your stable, one requires GM spec 4718M and the other requires GM spec 6094M. OCI does not matter for any of the following choices should easily handle the OLM suggestion and then some. Driving conditions and climate does not matter each of the following choices should handle all driving and climate conditions. The price of the oil is absolutely no issue for the oil in this hypothetical scenario is free and you can have all you want but, you can only have one of the oils. The choices are (in alpha order):

1. Amsoil 0W30
2. Amsoil 5W30
3. Castrol Edge 5W30
4. Mobil 1 0W30
5. Mobil 1 5W30
6. Pennzoil Platinum 5W30
7. Valvoline Syn Power 5W30

It does not matter if you think another oil is better than those listed, the ones listed are the only choices and remember, they are free so only the merits of the oil and its ability to meet the stated specs should be considered.

Based on the choices above I guess it's PP all the way...

Reason: PP is the best for keeping your engine clean and that is based on 150k+ in Toyotas that are spotless and how nicely it cleaned up a Honda 4cyl that was a bit dirty.

Well if PAO was the goal, I would definitely select Amsoil (PAO version), though I think Synpower is probably PAO also and if I could verify it on the MSDS, then it might be a toss up bet Synpower and Amsoil.

So far so good with Castrol Edge.

That being said, Since I know more about this other oil and I am sure of its quality and performance. As of now, I would go with Pennzoil Platnium.

Agree with the first part....but Valvoline for the other part..

Amsoil 0w-30 by a freakin' mile. It's the closest thing on the list to a cost-no-object oil, and cost is not an object...

Brand new cars or new to you? If not brand new, then it depends on how old they are and whether they are still under warranty. If under warranty, then I would definitely go with an oil that is API certified and meets the warranty requirements established by the manufacturer.

I would probably choose between Castrol Edge 5w30 and M1 0W-30 if they meet manufacturer specs.

For this exercise you can assume that the vehicles are new.

So far M1 is not doing very well.

Doing well in your car, or doing well on this forum? The differences between these oils are being overly-magnified way out of proportion to reality based on all kinds of factors (including what oil brand that grand-dad and dad have used for the last 50 years--even though the company has been sold and someone else makes their oil now).

It is much more important that you get the one with the right specs and certifications, and the right viscosity grade appropriate for your vehicle/weather/driving conditions.

The differences between two quality oils with the same specs/certification and viscosity are about 95% psychological, just like when my car runs much smoother right after I wash it.

Either of the 0-30 oils if the engine isn't leaking/seeping oil and both meet 4718M. Fuel economy would be my primary reason why. Cold weather performance would be another one.

PP

It's just too good.

It's in my 'Vette right now (GM 4718M) and also in my Toyota Sienna where I like the extended change interval.

I can buy any of the oils on the list.

I choose the PP.

hmm... if money is no object I'd have to choose Amsoil's sso, then PP because I'm having a very good experience with it so far.

For free? Amsoil SSO 0W-30. No doubt about it.

Some good oils on the list, but the ONLY real negative of SSO is the list price. If you drop that barrier you may as well take this superior oil.
