I have an antique transmission ('46 Indian) that contains brass bushings. I've heard that modern hypoid gear oils contain sulphur which can dissolve brass. I'm currently using Valvoline 75W90 gear oil, which is labeled 'hypoid', in this transmission. Is this going to damage the brass??

I don't know but living in the bay area Chevron oil makes an excellent gear lube Delo esi and they have an 800# for free advice.
that trans way back when may have been filled with a NON sulfur oil like a fatty compounded gear oil.
Do you have any spec on what is used? GL-4 and GL-5 hypoid have sulfur and would not be the correct oil to use.
Look for a GL-1 gear oil is will be more better than a GL-4/GL-5 as far as corroison goes tho even a GL-5 now days is far better than what they were find out what is recomended.

Most modern GL5 gear oils are buffered, so the sulfur doesn't have an effect.
