Hydraulic Jack Oil

As someone recently and rightly observed here, I know nothing about hydraulic jacks. Other than how to use them, that is. But that's why I hang out here, to learn.

I have an older bottle jack that might just need oil, and there's lots of oil around here. Other than going and buying a bottle of jack oil, will anything else work safely?

Use jack oil only.I have had good luck with Bars brand with stop leak.

I've seen it at Walmart in the auto section where they sell jacks.

Jack oil is normally SAE 10 or ISO 32. My jack sticker says do not use brake fluid. Easiest is buying a quart of Jack oil.

Think for yourself....doesn't it make sense that, being a hydraulic jack, it has a piston, some buna-n seals....plain old 10w of any flavor will work. I had old ATF sitting on the shelf. Its been in my jack for a few years....not an issue.
