Hello all,
Perhaps someone can help me understand the difference between a Hybrid 0w 20 verse a standard full synthetic 0w 20 weight.

I'm getting sucked into the Vortex of hybrid oil being engineered differently than the standard full synthetic.

I'm really on the fence about the differences? Are there different additives in the formulation to help the stop and start protection?

I have been trying both, and don't really see a difference.
Any thoughts am I missing something.

It's supposed to deal with moisture better being that the engine oil tends to not get to the perfect temperature a lot of the time . Nothing to do with start stop . I use the Valvoline Hybrid. I trust Valvoline to not just blow smoke , many on he said the Restore and protect was marketing also .

I see marketing still works.

I go for the best priced synthetic oil and lately that’s been M1 ESP 0w30

That makes sense. But how many fuel efficiency chasing hybrid vehicles are out there that call for 0w20? Tundra, 4Runner and Tacoma hybrids are different, and should behave like ICE most of the time.
I couldn't resist this nice sealed case so picked up one for my Sienna. It is 0.2 centistokes thicker than Amsoil SS 0w16 lol

Valvoline hybrid 0w20 is 8.8, the thickest in their 0w20 lineup, to fight fuel dilution?

Yeah so for the first time in my life I'm buying a strong hybrid rather than a gas or (more often than not, diesel) car that's going to be a city runabout. A suzuki grand vitara with the (cross badged) toyota M15D-FXE I3 strong hybrid engine. And of course it specs 0w16, in tropical India, with 10k mile OCI. Beyond switching to a 5k mile OCI, any particular issue with that engine in moving to at least a 0w20?

The 10k mile OCI is a big scam. Stick to 5k or less.

Yeah that's obvious enough :) I was asking about shifting to 0w20 at a minimum in these strong hybrids. I'm somewhat weirded out by pouring what feels like plain water into any engine, though I guess there are anti wear additives and to spare in all these ultra low viscosity oils' add packs.

You read my earlier comment in this thread? Look, the thickest 0w16 that I know of is Amsoil Signature Series which is 8 centistokes at 100° C. Mobile 1 Advanced fuel economy 0w-20, truck and suv 0w20, and hybrid 0w20 are 8.2. Do you see what I'm saying? A difference of 0.2 centistokes. If that 0.2 gives you peace of mind, then go right ahead lol. But Amsoil signature series 0w16 is unique, most 0w16 oils are not that thick. Mobil 1 Advanced fuel economy 0w16 is 7.6

And even that 0.6 cst isn’t much of a difference at all. Your oil will shift by that much in viscosity simply by having the oil temperature change by 5 degrees.

Exactly. Plus hybrid engines run cool. Mine has never crossed 180°, ever.

This year in July and August if we get hit by some crazy heatwave, I will share my oil temperature with you folks.
