We have any HVAC guys here. I smelled a smell like what happens when you first turn your heater on for the first time in the fall, you know that smell thats smells like burning dust/lint off the heater coils?? Anyway in a few minutes my wife also smelled it down stairs. The heater was off. I turned it on, the fan motor comes on but then the "main part" does'nt kick in, and no air from vents. I will call repairman in the morning but what do you guys think? Burned out heater coil?

furnaces are usually burn natural gas for heat so they don't really have a heating coil, just a heat exchanger. my guess is the fan motor burned out.

you really should have your furnace inspected by a pro every year. even a just hairline crack in the heat exchanger can cause carbon monoxide poisioning or a fire.

Is it a gas furnace? If so, usually what craps out on them is the hot-surface ignitor. After that, the most likely problem is the vacuum sensor for the draft inducer fan, and after that, the flame sensor.

I assume, from your description, that what you're hearing is the draft inducer fan which comes on shortly before the hot-surface ignitor is turned on and the gas valve is turned on.

If this isn't a gas furnace, then nothing I said is applicable.
