I have been using OEM filter on all my vehicles so far, not familiar with the aftermarket filters. Buying a new to me H2 with a out 100k miles, and planning to run VRP 5w30 for the first a few oil changes to clean it up. My OCI will probably be around 3k to 5k miles going forward, so high absorption is more important than long life in the filter. What would you all recommend me to use?

Currently, you cannot go wrong with a Premium Guard built filter. These filters include, but are not limited to: PG4006EX, CQ Premium 85042, NAPA Gold 1042, and Microgard MSL51042.

A good option at your local Walmart would be the Mobil1 M1-107, as long as it has holes in the center tube and not louvers.

Edit: I should add these numbers are based on an ‘06 model. They may change with later models.

If you can find your Mobil 1 oil filter part number at Wal-Mart & it has a clear wrap along the bottom base of the filter it's the new ones that will work well & possibly easily obtainable. Otherwise Oreilly's auto Microgard Select or Carquest Premium. Purolator 20k's at Walmart as well for a reasonable price.

I just went through their descriptions,
I could not find filtering specs for M1, but it being rated for 20k miles makes me thing they might have focused more on its absorption capacity vs efficiency.

Napa mentions 30 micron with 99% efficiency
Micro Guard and Premium Guard : 25 micron at 99%

Carquest at 20 micron at 99.5%

I Presume orher specs would be comparable (bypass pressure etc.). These all seem more than good enough, especially considering tech should have come a long way since these engines were designed over 20 years ago.

I think I will load up on Carquest filters especially since they have additional discounts now. Perhaps the ideal would be using an extended OCI filter like M1 with VRP, and then moving to CQ. I might do that

The new Mobil oil filters are 99% @ 30u ... it's on the box. Same efficiency as they were when built by Mann-Hummel. It was also verified with Highline Warren who are now the middle man for Mobil oil filters.

my recommendation, Carquest Premium 85222, it’s the longer filter that was originally spec’d for the HD trucks with the 6.0. same everything just longer for more media.

I think there is a typo on that part number, dod you mean 85042?

no sir, 84502 is M22x1.5 and internal bypass for 07.5+ trucks. 99-07 is 13/16-16 and bypass in the filter mount.
I must be missing something here. Unfortunately i could not find a filter from Carquest with a number 85222.

What AAP website suggest for the vehicle is CQ 85042 just as @MurkyAsparagus suggested. There is also a CQ85402 which, from the photos, seems like a longer version of 85042.

I do not know how accurate that is, but an LLM says AC Delco PF 46 is the suggested filter, whereas PF61 would be the taller option. Funny enough that LLM also suggest CQ85222 as the taller alternative, even though Google does not give me any results with that number.

On a side note, they my local AAP had Fram Force FF3506 filter that had exact same 99.5% of 20 micron efficiency, for $3 a piece. I bought a couple of those

my apologies, it is 85522 and i was reading your messages wrong. 84052 is correct and the 85522 is the longer version. i need to focus when reading lol.

on the fram force, that is an tough guard model in a different can. not great but not the worst. i wouldn’t personally use one but i know many a million miles have been driven on them. fram 3675 is the long version of the 3506.

Thanks @BrendanC. I definitely have a lot to learn, for the time being filtering efficiency is the only metric I know that the manufacturers reports and that can be used to compare different filters.

A taller filter idea also does makes sense, I presume that would lead to less restrictions, especially over time as filter starts to absorb things, all else equal.

After reading more of this forum, I see there’s good reason to be skeptical about the QC of many filters. I didn’t realize this field had such widespread issues.

Having my clean one owner ‘02 Chevy 2500 HD w/6.0L

Believe same motor as your H2

My two favorite filters are Wix 51522XP and the K&N HP2006

Noting my service records I’ve changed the oil/filter 41 times

Super Tech 5w30 synthetic has been oil of choice

Truck has 147K miles

i would rethink the wix XP, it is no longer the Wix you once knew. nice to see another 02 2500HD. they’re great trucks.

Yea but…..the 02 HD is the highway cruiser

Maybe sees the 4-5K annually

How bad could the XP be ?

The ‘02 waiting for next highway trip coming soon
