I'll not post the direct link here since I'm not sure if forum rules allow it as it's biased and from a major company. I'm not trying to promote anything, just a good rundown of most name brand filters and pics.

Google "motorcraft oil filter cutaway"
Should be the first regular link (pdf) file.

Mods, if this is in violation of forum rules, please delete this post.

I think it's been posted here before, and isn't a violation of the rules, at least to my knowledge. Nonetheless, many of us enjoy looking at stuff like that, so thanks for reminding us about it!

Personally, I don't think it's that biased - at least not like some of the marketing to which we're exposed. For me, Motorcraft and Wix happen to be my filters of choice.

Does the sludge really build up as they suggest against the outside shell as in the pictorial? I have never seen it like that on a cut-open filter, but assume people handle and turn filters filters and by the time its cut open its no longer there.

Looks like some of the Wix brand filters are better than their OEM versions.

Personally I know that an M1 will be better than a Motorcraft. I also find it funny that they used a Pennzoil filter (made by purolator who makes the Motorcraft filters) yet they didn't use purolator in any of the examples.

Maybe on an engine that is a super sludger ... but if that's the case it probably doesn't matter much anyway because the whole engine has major issues.
