Hub bearing Choice.

Did you order anything yet Trav? I just ordered some SFK's for the rear of mine since they are 1/3 the cost of the AC Delco bearings for the rear. The front AC Delco bearings I installed last year were much more reasonable but the rears were too much. I just received them (SFK's ordered from Amazon) and they are made in the USA so that is a good sign. I don't know when I'll get around to installing them.
 
Yep i went with SKF for all 4,quick job i did all 4 in one afternoon.Nice parts,that are very well finished,Rock was about $450 for all 4 inc shipping.

Mine used 12mm socket head not the T55 on the front ones and had loctite red on them OEM.I just hit the hub with a torch at the bolt areas to melt the loctite and they came out easy.
Rears were just 10MM and no loctite.The parking brake bracket was a PITA the small Torx were rusted tight,Kroil and a hand impact driver got them out.

I put a 12" front brake upgrade on the car at the same time using rotors and caliper brackets for a 2001 Impala,
the calipers are the same.It stops noticeably better and looks great with the inside of the wheel filled with slotted and drilled zink plated rotors.
 
Good to hear it went well. Hopefully mine aren't too rusted, but they probably are. I also have been planning on doing the 12" upgrade but my pads and rotors never seem to wear out so I'll keep waiting. My car is just shy of 150k miles and the rotors were replaced under warranty at 35k miles on the odo and I replaced the pads sometime later when the pads (replaced under warranty at 7k miles on the odo) started to fall apart around 60k miles on the odo. I do more highway driving than I ever have and my pad and rotor life reflect that.
 
They are not to bad even if there is corrosion a few good whacks loosened it right up,the actual mounting part on the rears is only in there about 3/8 of an inch.

These are the rotors i got,this is the 6th set of these on different cars and SUV's over the last few years.They hold up well in NE winters (not this summer only car) and never had one warp.$130 for all 4.

Not bad considering the fronts were the same size as the rear.

That may not be the case but just my own feelings on them.

Seeing this thread gave me second thoughts about the Timken hub I ordered from Rock Auto the other day. I chose Timken based on their reputation and quality due to being made in the US.

The hub arrived today and the box is clearly marked as made in USA. However, I could find no indication on the hub itself where it is made. Possibly there are some Timken products that are sourced elsewhere, but for now there are at least some that are made in the US.
 
If its Made in USA then its probably 100% USA.
I didn't want to order them blind after seeing some Timken boxed Made in China.Someone posted about their Timken hubs being Made in Korea for their Crown Vic.

Glad you got something decent.
 
Finding the country of origin can get rather messy. The box can say "made in USA", and the hub unit may indeed be assembled in the USA, but the critical components may be imported.

Next time someone runs into a failed aftermarket bearing made in the USA, take it apart and check the origin of the races (if marked as such). You may be surprised.
 
Now you mention it i remember buying a idler pulley Made in USA on the box but right on the bearing the most critical part was Made in China.

It would appear the SKF use a bearing Made in France or Sweden depending on type.any idea what type is used in these hubs?
My dad owned a large machine manufacturing plant from the late 60's through the 90's and told me that Swedish bearing were the best but that was years ago,i have no idea if this holds true today.

Some of the best carbide indexable tools in the world come from Sweden (Sandvik Coromant and Seco), as well as high quality steel for raw materials, so it wouldn't surprise me if there were at least one good bearing manufacturer from there as well.

Good point, sounds a lot like the vehicles we drive.
