I have nothing that John Browning didn't engineer into me. I am the 1911 and I have my faults like a poorly designed extractor.

In all honesty, I'm no expert on fluids as they are not my area of engineering expertise. But I did study some of this basic stuff in engineering classes many years ago. It was difficult to watch hundreds on this board get misled into believing the HTHS test is some sort of shear stability test.

What's more bothering than this is that there are (or at least I thought there were) some folks who really do have real educationally based engineering expertise with fluids who failed to step up to the plate and corect this highly perpetuated BITOG misconception that the HTHS test being a shear stability indicator by design. I'm talking about the folks who studied the whole deal in detail (Navier Stokes, Reynolds numbers, all the partial derivatives, etc) who have forgotten more than I know or learned about fluids. Why don't they step and correct folks when the threads get way off base and misinformation becomes twisted into the stone cold truth. Do they have an ethical responsibility to do so when we start smoking the peace pipe on this board?

ps: You are of course entirely correct about the intent of the HT/HS test and Bosch Injector tests. It is the multi-pass, Bosch Injector test that measures shear stability, as it simply tears the oil apart at the molecular level.

The HT/HS test measures how "squeezeable" the oil is in a tapered bearing, which I interpret to indicate the relative # of polymer content. All things being equal, the more polymer, the more likely the oil is to thin out in service.

all i want to know is if i can use redline 5w-20, since it has a pretty high hths #, even though my car requires a 30 wt.

Yes you can. Especially RL. I believe all the new Honda 4cyl engines call for 20wt oils now. Even the Hemi uses a 20wt. Better additives have allowed for the use of lower viscosity, for most, not all engines.

Now see, if you'd joined the USAF instead of the Navy, you'd understand all this stuff - and you wouldn't have to wear those silly white uniforms. LOL!

but i'd rather be an E-6 at age 23 in the navy than an E-5 at age 40 in the air force.

and sir, i'm proud of the fact that the navy is unique in its own. we have the widest variety of uniforms, and we have our own lingo, including rank names.
