Do I need to consider a HTHS oil for a 2001 Audi A4, 1.8T engine? My OCI will be either 3000 or 5000 miles; The 5000 OCI is what the owners manual recommends.

I will be running either AMSOIL OE or XL, PU, PP or M1; I assume all of these oils are considered HTHS.

How do I determine which oils are HTHS? What numbers do I need to look at and what range should they be in?

Any advice would be helpful.

ACEA A3 has a minimum HTHS value (the exact number eludes me at the moment). It would be wise to search out that specification in your hunt for oils.

VW 502.00 is also a good spec to watch out for.

Generally you will find these ratings in some semi-syn and synthetic xW-40 and thicker 30 weight oils, like GC 0w-30.

High Temp,Hi Str (HSHS)oils have a specific value. Your owner manual will provide a HSHS value required for your engine oil. I find this value in the PDS for each of the oils I am interested in. Ed

Every oil has an HTHS viscosity. The important thing for a European tubocharged engine is to find an oil that has an ACEA rating of A3/B3 or A3/B4. This assures a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5 centipoise. Look in your owners manual and find the VW oil spec (502.00, 503.00, etc), then look for an oil that has that approval.

HTHS is a measure of viscosity which all oils will have.
THe minimum recommended virgin HTHSV for your 1.8T engine is 3.5cP @ 150C. That translates into an oil that is at least a heavy 30wt. Not all oil companies provide the HTHSV rating of their oils but Amsoil, PP, PU and M1 do.

Any of these in the 5-40, 0-40, or 10-40 weights will be excellent for 5,000 miles of severe service. No need to go 3,000 miles unless you're running on the racetrack.

(p.s. however, some of us have been running 30wt oils in 1.8T engines and they seem to do just fine).

As was mentioned by others, VW 502.00 or ACEA A3 spec oil will take care of the necessary HT/HS requirements for your engine.

in my old 2000 audi TT i ran mobil 1 10w40 and it worked great. then however, there weren't really any 0w40 or 5w40 off the shelfs that i could find. now id probably us m1 0w40 if i still had it.
