can anyone figure out a ballpark HTHS for castrol EDGE FST 10w30 based on its Kinematic vis? the MSDS shows 71.3cst @40c and 11.43cst @100c.

i was trying to browse through their PDS but it is useless with a bunch of "OK" for nearly every spec. thanks guys.

Castrol does not blend their own base oils for the North American market. If they publish definite numbers on their PDS, then switch to a different base oil supplier, they would have to spend thousands of dollars to retest and republish their PDS.
Valvoline is in the same boat, but Ashland is their exclusive blender, so they have better consistency in their product. Some Castrol oil is also blended at Ashland, but it is mostly the GTX family of oils. Valvoline has recently lodged a complaint for better standardization of base oils specifications.
I would expect in an SN/GF-5 10w30, FST would put up HTHS numbers of about 3.1-3.3. For better HTHS performance from a Castrol 30w, move to GC. To meet Euro specs it will have a HTHS of 3.5 or greater, and because of superior base oils, a lower NOAK number.

I'm sure depending on market pricing, base oils come from Chevron, Mobil, Shell, or S-Oil. All companies produce High quality Group III oils. no worries.

The only oil brand that is 100% "in house" is Chevron/Havoline. Chevron refines their own base oils, develops their own additive packages (they own and operate Oronite), and blends the products at their own facilities.

thanks salv. that's great info to know. basically castrol buys base stocks then formulates their additives in to produce their desired product specs?

BTW i like the user name. i lived in El Salvador in Central America for a year in 2008-2009. your username (salv) always makes me think of great friends i have there.

I know I've seen it before.

Here, I found it.

Castrol Edge FST Ti pds

Typical of Castrol they play it tight lipped, they don't even give a VI on the 10w30, but looking at the kv spread I'd still guess it's about 3.1. That is quite a spread for a 10w30 I'd suspect high VI for a 10w30 as well.

How do you know Castrol does not blend their own oils in the US? How do you know Castrol has Ashland make their GTX line up? I'm not saying your wrong, just curious where you got the info.

FYI, Ashland owns valvoline but I'm sure you know that.
