Valvoline is in the same boat, but Ashland is their exclusive blender, so they have better consistency in their product. Some Castrol oil is also blended at Ashland, but it is mostly the GTX family of oils. Valvoline has recently lodged a complaint for better standardization of base oils specifications.
I would expect in an SN/GF-5 10w30, FST would put up HTHS numbers of about 3.1-3.3. For better HTHS performance from a Castrol 30w, move to GC. To meet Euro specs it will have a HTHS of 3.5 or greater, and because of superior base oils, a lower NOAK number.
How do you know Castrol does not blend their own oils in the US? How do you know Castrol has Ashland make their GTX line up? I'm not saying your wrong, just curious where you got the info.
FYI, Ashland owns valvoline but I'm sure you know that.
