This is the first sample of HPL in my/my wife's 4Runner. Previous two fills were Penzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30. This vehicle has received mostly 5000 mile changes with store bought synthetics (PUP, Mobil 1 0w40, Castrol edge etc...) since 10,000 miles when we purchased it. I did a "short" interval in case any cleaning occured, and to set a baseline for analysis, the goal is to do 10,0
00 mile intervals with HPL. Absolutely nothing showed up in the filter, like previous oil changes, which was nice to see.

The vehicle sees mixed usage, plenty is typical in-town/ highway driving. We reside in a city, so the vehicle does see some short trips where it does not reach operating temperature. It gets used for ski trip duty up steep canyons in cold temperatures, and also sees extended periods of 80+ mph longer trips loaded with camping gear, as well as plenty of time in low range off-road in rocky/dusty desert and high desert environments. I would consider the use of this vehicle on the severe end of things, durability and off-road capability were primary concerns when we purchased it.

I love HPL, and I’m certainly not going to dissuade you from its use, but your 4Runner is certainly not in need of an HPL-caliber oil for 10k use. IMO, do an in-service sample at 10k (I.e. don’t change it before sample results come back), and sample again every 5k til it’s either out of grade or TBN < 2, or TBN < TAN. If you’re paying for the premium stuff, you may as well maximize its benefits!

I’m totally surprised your PUP tests stayed in grade…in fact may have thickened relative to VOA, which I thought was under 10.0.

I know the HPL is overkill for that interval, just like a store synthetic changed at 5k is, but I am not trying to maximize value, just trying to maximize protection and cleanliness, and not change oil quite as often as I have been.

Because there is no appreciable fuel. People on here keep conflating a viscosity loss due to fuel contamination and one that is actual mechanical shear of the VM. One has something to do with the oil and one does not.

Considering the vast majority of UOA are Blackstone analyses doesn't help.

Plenty of life left in the oil to continue running safely, why change it? That’s a great report.

We have seen on this board highly extended oil changes cause deposit buildup, even with great UOA reports. I do wish I had a vehicle I was willing to risk super extended oil changes on, but this isnt the one to do that with.

Where/when did we see this? Curious.
This is the example that sticks in my mind, I want to be clear that I do not think that deposits on this level would cause any perceivable mechanical issue, I still do not want them forming in my engine though.

I'm backtracking a bit on my TBN position lol. Someone pointed out today how Tooslick would say once TBN is under 4 (approx) that you may see a drop in cleanliness. I do wonder if HPL's very strong TBN, or any oil with high stable TBN, does in fact keep engine cleaner.

Detergents/dispersants are what keep things from sticking to metal surfaces.

You could easily double your interval here, maybe more, but I understand your thinking.
