I'm curious about the volatility of HPL CK4 Premium CC HDEO 5w-40. ASTM D6375 is fine; I am aware they don't test for traditional Noack via ASTM D5800 (per a search here for existing answers). The reason for my inquiry is for a potential air-cooled engine application, specifically a Generac GP6700E.
I'm also curious if the PDS (https://www.hplubricants.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/HD-CK4-Engine-Oil-PDS.pdf) has a typo. The 0W-30 lists 5,314 cP @ -35C; while the 5W-40 lists 3,551 cP @ -30C. I fear that '3' should be a '5', although that's still great.
As for why a botique oil in a cheap portable generator with a Chonda engine? It was purchased during a two-week power outage during an ice storm earlier this year (Winter Storm Fern), lows were around 0F. This summer we've frequently had highs around 100F interspersed with storms. It's got some flavor of Mobil 1 5W-30 in it now (I can't recall if it was "High Mileage" or "Extended Performance"; whatever I had around for the ol' Subaru).
Perhaps I'm over-reacting a bit from horror stories of Floridians toasting their gensets on 5W-30. I strongly suspect that lots of folks were hot loading fuel and never checking the oil until it locked up after 5+ days of continuous runtime, at which point it had probably consumed most of the ~1 quart of oil they hold. I can't see a little splash lube engine running at 3,600 RPM shearing down any decent synthetic in that time, even in the Florida heat, but consumption via combustion (unavoidable other than going thicker AFAIK) and evaporative losses...
