HPL 20W Engine Cleaner?

Give them a call, meaning HPL, they might be able to make you a 20 weight Engine Cleaner.
I may do that... the description reads, "Engine Cleaner is designed to be used with XW-20, XW-30, and XW-40 engine oils."

I assumed this meant HPL made three weights, 20W, 30W, and 40W... but maybe they intend the use of one quart of 30W Cleaner with 5 quarts of 20W oil in 20W applications.

I think they make a 30W and a 40W Engine Cleaner, all you can do is talk with them and they can answer any questions or concerns you have with there 30W Cleaner.

Which "flavor" of their oils have this additional cleaning capability? All? Some more than others?
All, to some extent I believe. Since they use esters pretty much universally in their products, along with AN's, both of which provide a cleaning function. Dave @High Performance Lubricants could provide some more detail, but that's my understanding.

+1

According to HPL, their oil cleans even more aggressively than the cleaner. The cleaner is a gentle cleaning introduction to their oils.
Exactly why I am going to start with the cleaner for one OCI, and change the filter every 1,500 miles.

More often than not, this fear is unfounded. Engines running properly with not have large amounts of sludge.
Perhaps, but this is for a "new to me" used car with over 100,000 miles on it, and given the visual clues, it has not been used gently, nor maintained to BITOG standards.

Unless the valvetrain is heavily caked with sludge deposits, you have nothing to worry about.
