HPL 0W30 Premium Plus UOA 6,013 miles 2022 Camry 2.5

Nice report. My wife doesn’t drive your car 😃
I don't either! It was my wife's car, lol. It was Castrol Magnatec - Great stuff then Disco'd. Stupid. Their Edge is garbage, IMHO.

So, you wife drives like Carlos Reutemann on the way to the mall? Mine is about 70% of the way there ... depending on the mood of the day, lol.

I got similar results with off the shelf oil in an old rackety Subaru**

10x less moly in that cheap oil and a grade lower.

So why if you ain't racing to the moon?

There are some "cheep" oils with lots of Moly. Quaker State and Valvoline, I think. What are the opinions/experiences with those oils?

I see that running 30W in an engine spec’s for 16W had no ill effects (as I would have thought). This leads me to conclude that running 20W in an 8W spec’d Toyota should also be fine? (except for possibly a miniscule hit in MPGs).
I've got a 2024 Corolla that calls for 0w8. I dumped the factory fill at 500 miles and put in 0w20. As others have said there are many cars with high mileage running 20w oils. I do prefer 30w oils so I might try that next.

Why the jump from 0w-8 to 0w-20? Wouldn't a bump to 0w-16 have made more sense?

I've not spent a lot of time in eastern Washington but the last time I visited the ambient temperature topped 100F. I am just curious to know if you drive the car hard in really how weather or what other motivation you might have. The Japanese have been running 0w-16 in Toyotas for more than a decade.

I have two alternative use cases here where I am considering a lower viscosity. Neither our 2017 Prius V nor the 2023 Prius LE see many highway miles and I've been thinking or dropping them back to 0w-16 and 0w-12 respectively. Your Mileage may vary...

I did some research and the differences between 0w16 and 0w20 are very close. I use Supertech 0w20 because it's cheap and easily available. I know that the regular 0w20 Supertech is very thin for a 20w oil.

The difference between 0w-8 and 0w-20 is pretty significant and your car calls for 0w-8. That being said I doubt that using 0w-20 will do any harm.
The Australian owner's manual (along with other countries that don't have CAFE) says 5w30 is acceptable in this engine, along with 10w30 and 10w40. CAFE is the main factor behind 0w8 oil. There have been many threads posted here on this subject.

Okay - but I have been to Australia and can assure you that the climate there is different than that where you live. I wouldn't advise using xw-30 oil for your application. This is just my two cents on the matter. In the interests of full disclosure I do use 0w-30 in a 0w-20 spec'd vehicle.

Many years ago I had an Audi A4 Turbo Quattro that called for 10w-30 oil. This vehicle had an oil temperature gauge. One day I got the bright idea to put in Mobil1 15w-50. This turned out to be a huge mistake. The oil temperature jumped up and the acceleration became sluggish. IIRC I dumped that oil at 500 miles and went back to the reservation. Toyotas are likely to run on anything you put in them but I remain curious as to why you didn't try a 0w-16 oil before proceeding to 0w-20.

The same reason I run a 30w in my Camry that calls for 16w; higher hths. I don’t care about losing 0.3 mpg, I care about engine longevity.

Is Castrol making anything today that still stands out among other brands? I know about the acclaim of GC and Magnatec.

You did better than all my reports, less than 1 ppm iron per 1k miles. HPL is legit? Or maybe 30 grade oil did the trick?
