My HP tc4200 laptop is refusing to charge. I tested the power supply and got 18 volts at the connector. The battery is a month old. I've heard the connector on the motherboard can go bad. Is there a band-aid for this connector? Or is replacement the only option?

Is it one of those connectors with the male end on the computer itself?

Those are indeed common to go bad, and I have replaced the connectors on the motherboard's more than once on machines that use them. (So far Toshiba and Acer)

Take a pen or pencil and see if you can wiggle the male connector in the power plug while the machine is off. I find this is commonly what happens when the connector is no longer working.

I had the same thing happen on a Toshiba many years ago. Replacement with a newer more stout plug was the only repair. As I recall it ran about $200.

If you are decent with a soldering iron and computers, you can do the repair for about $10 and an hour or so.

I would suggest being very good with a soldering iron..
and not being intimidated by a million little pieces you have to remove to get the case totally off.
I had 2 cheapie toshibas go to the dump for this problem

my not so cheap lenovo seems to have a better connector design.

I'm not great at soldering. I do have a spare motherboard missing a RAM slot to swap in while the better motherboard is getting repaired. The local computer guys guesstimated ~$100 to fix after looking briefly at the laptop.

And I owe my fiancee a big thanks for letting me steal hers!
