Yesterday I got a notice from HP that I had set up and then within minutes changed the PIN on my HP Scan to Email account

Welcome to HP Scan to email.

Your printer user name is: [removed]@gmail.com
Your PIN is: xxxx (number redacted)

You will need this PIN to access your Scan to Email service from the printer.

Thank You,

Then within minutes:

Dear Scan to Email User,

The new PIN for your username [removed]@gmail.com is xxxx (number redacted)

You will need this new PIN to access your Scan to Email service from the printer.

Regards,
HP Team

I'm using Ubuntu Mate's scan software. Anything scanned is filed as a document on my computer. Checked my phone, I have no HP scanning aps installed so I don't think it's a butt dial. Emailed HP back on the notice address but as expected it was an email to no where. For the life of me I can't figure out hacking risks unless someone has my gmail account, but why would a hacker install a scan to email account? I do have an HP all-in-one but don't think anyone is breaking into my house to use it.

Any idea what's going on here? I guess I could establish an HP scan to email account and then change the PIN, but I don't know why I'd want to have this in the first place, my Linux Simple Scan software works just fine.
