How's your orange intake these days?

I'm currently consuming six to eight California naval oranges per day. I always do that when oranges are in season. My girlfriend says I'll wake up as a giant Kafkaesque orange some morning.

I eat apples and bananas like crazy but can't stomach the acidity of most oranges. On a lighter note I thought your post was going to be about the Syracuse Orange...Go Orange!!!

Was nearly going to do an orange thread last Wednesday.

An orange per day at present.

mostly valencias, as that's what's around.

Had two California Navels during the week, and while perfectly coloured and shaped were as dry and tasteless as anything I've ever had before.

I guess that's what happens when you use the evaporation of internal moisture as a refrigerant.

I'm not one for fruits and sweet things. But I do have a hankering for fresh veggies. Well, I guess tomatoes are a fruit - I eat a lot of tomatoes. I also snack on celery, broccoli, and carrot. It's odd; I used to have a massive sweet tooth.

In honour of this thread (and it being lunchtime), I wandered out to the back yard, and plucked a blood orange off my tree.

Last year, they were hard as bullets and sour. I let them stay on the tree for another winter, and they've sweetened up nicely.

If you look at our distant ancestors (and wild animals in general), their version of a "balanced" diet wasn't meat and three veg every day.

Kill an animal, and eat it...if it took you three days, then you ate meat for three days. Blackberries in season, and they would eat them until the fruit was exhausted. Go hungry for a few days, whatever.

Eating a truckload of local seasonal produce when it's in season will be balanced by not having it in those quantities for the balance of the year.

Berries, actually. At least from a botanist's view.

Agree. Buy local, fresh and in season.

Our hankering for and easy access to the exotic out of season will be tempered by the current downturn.

Not at all, unless your tooth enamel is weak; then acid will cause further damage. Besides, six oranges isn't much. It's certainly better than guzzling a quart of OJ. You get much more roughage when eating the fruit, not to mention pectin from the pith and albedo.

A diabetic should probably not follow my lead.

My average daily fruit (berry etc) intake is about 4 handful. For example two oranges, a banana, a pound of grapes or some other combo.

Haven't had oranges in quite a few months. I prefer grapefruit which I consume about 4 per week nowadays.

Grapefuit is great, too. I haven't had any exceptional tangerines this year yet. I hope they're still coming!

Was an article in New Scientist ages ago that were looking at different foods, and the effect on acidity of bodily fluids.

Orange juice sent you acid, while oranges (fruit) sent you alkaline. Even lemons (fruit) were neutral compared to strongly acid lemon juice.

Does food intake affect whether your body is acidic or alkaline? As far as I know, an acidic body is a fertile grounds for cancerous cells. I just don't know if one can control his/her body's levels of acidity.

Yes, you have control. Eating acidic foods does not equal an acidic state. It depends on the metabolization of the food in question. You can find lists of foods that shift your body towards and alkaline state online.
