How To Program Home Link Garage Door Openers

New house has almost new Genie garage door openers. Supplied openers work fine. I have two cars with the Home Link feature, Suzuki and Ford. Have tried to link them according to the instructions in the owner's manual. Didn't work. The instructions on the Genie website were essentially the same.

Is there a trick to this operation?

is there a learning button to press on the opener? (mine is purple)

IIRC was chinese fire drill. Have the homelink learn from a handheld opener.. then quickly go hit the purple button on the opener and press the button in car.
to set up the "rolling codes" or whatever its called.

Rather than a 1 line question.. how about you tell us a story of how you are trying to set it up.. bonus points for posting the homelink instructions for your vehicles. and your garage door opener manual/model.

edit: found the generic instructions that are what I did

1. Press and hold the two outside buttons on the HomeLink® system until the LED starts to blink, release buttons.
2. Press and hold the desired HomeLink® button and the transmit button on your rolling code transmitter at the same time until the HomeLink® LED changes from a slow blink to a rapid blink. (Your system is now programmed)
3. Locate the learn code button on your garage door opener. (These are located under the light cover or on the rear panel depending on model)
4. Press the learn code button on the garage door opener, a red LED will start to blink. (You will have 30 seconds to complete programming)
5. While the LED on the garage door opener is blinking, return to the vehicle and press the pre-programmed HomeLink® button 4 times. (Or until the garage door operates).

Do you have a garage opener remote? If so, try using that as the pairing “tool” for the HL button. I believe on my Mazda I held down the HL button while simultaneously using the garage door opener remote (held close to HL) to open/close the door.

I did this last month.

You need to clear the homelink in the car first: step 1 above.
Then use the existing remote according to the procedure in step 2.
Step 3-4 is when you go to the existing opener and press the learn button.
Step 5 is when you press the button in step 2 in your car.

Agree. Sometimes when I go to program a new opener, the old setup is not replaced with clearing codes.

Also, change the button you are using for the most used opener. I have had Homelink buttons wear out, especially on VW/Audis.

How old are the vehicles? Homelink changed a few years back and old homelink is not compatible with new homelink 2.0.

Don't remember the exact year that version 2.0 came out (want to say 2008 or so??), but my 2002 F150 has a home link that does not work with my yellow wire chamberlain opener I installed about 5-6 years ago.

You pray to whichever god you pray too, and then you do the proper sequence 6 times before it finally takes.

But you have to clear it, teach the remote to the home link, click the teach button on the opener, then click the button in the car again.

There are many ways to make this system work correctly. It depends on how convenient it will be to open the gate. Some mechanics may even install a separate button under the steering wheel of the car, which will be connected to the gate via a router. I think you should consult a specialist not to break the gate by accident. Sometimes it's better to trust a professional to avoid spoiling the project. For example, when I was building a house, I bought quality surveying services in the North East. Some openers only allow 4-5 devices. Maybe do a full reset and start from scratch.
