Sorry to take this slightly off-topic, but I cannot disagree more.

I drove around in a 2010 Mazda 3 for most of Saturday afternoon, and that car is definitely worth the money. The handling and steering feel is outstanding for an economy car. I still believe that it's the best car that you can buy for under $20k.

No man, not because it's elementary school; read my post again: the car they bought is NOT an unpopular car, which means there would be many people here also who owns the same or a similar car, and if i mention it, there's going to be a discussion about the car which can turn into a real fiasco, and that will surely turn the topic way off topic...i guarantee that this will happen.

so THAT's why I don't want to mention the make/model; not because it's elem. school. if it WAS elem, school, i WOULD mention it - you can't imagine the back and forth it would start!

Just be happy for them, they may not like your taste in vehicles either. It's a big purchase and I'm sure they are proud of it. I see no need to to shoot it down. I feel there no need to pretend

He just doesn't want to get into a debate over the car being either good or bad. He's sure its fine for someone ..his friends it appears to be ..but not for him. He just wants to get suggestions on how to be polite without looking like its forced.

I think Tbird needs some time in a minivan ..a used minivan.

You have been reduced two caste levels for 6 months!! Now go and learn some humility!!

That will teach him!!

i AM happy that they're happy - i have no need to pretend about THAT.
and I will never "shoot it down"; if i could do that, then there's no need for this thread - i'd say "sorry; i hate it" and be done - but I don't want to hurt their feelings that way.

it's when they ask what I think TECHNICALLY about the car that I have to pretend, or MY opinion, see?

Let me guess, ethnic background: Indian? Gots to be a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

Need to start a new thread with the title "Guess what gorgeous car my friend(s)bought that I absolutely love"

And my mama always taught me that if you have nutin nice to say then don't say anything. If you lie you know its a fast track to where!

very good advice in MOST cases;
problem HERE is: when you get ASKED point blank "so man, what do you THINK?" with a beaming face, it's difficult to say "nutin" :)

Why not just comment on how happy they seem with the car and that you wish them best with it?

Don't comment on the car, comment on them and wish them well.

i will do that of course, in fact i have ALREADY done THAT ("i am happy for you/congrats" part), when the guy called me;

BUT, they WILL ask about the CAR too, 'cause I have a reputation sort of, to "know" about cars and stuff, as I have often discussed or offered advice in the past about oil changes and simple car-stuff.
so it's kinda difficult not to comment on the car.

oh by their tastes/preferences a v8 Tbird is an abomination, i know that for sure (though they'd never SAY that either)

and I certainly didn't ask them - hehe.

Isn't it nice how we all go through life not telling each other what we really think.....lol.

Thank God for the internets where we can all "assualt" each other with what we really think!

BTW....I love the TBirds based on the Lincoln(the Mark VIII frame not the LS uni retro miss hit)....I had a '95 and loved it, the poor mans Lincoln.

Surely there's a feature or two on the car that you like or admire.

I have strong likes and dislikes in cars, but in general I love any kind of machine and I can find something I like about it.

Whether it's good value for money, reliability, the sound of the door closing, that cool outdoor thermometer, nice tires.

Something. It really doesn't matter what you think about their car. If you value the friendship, you say something nice about it because that is what is expected.

Hold your nose and get through the quick conversation then you'll never have to talk about it again. The alternative is hurting their feelings or giving them buyer's remorse either of which negative feelings they will associate with you.

Sometimes there's no upside and significant downside to telling the truth (when it's a white lie).
