How to get an 8,000+ OCI?

First hi, I've stalked your forums for a while. Decided to join when the pile of questions got too big.

Anyway, my biggest question right now is how can I extend an OCI? I'm not doing it so much for convenience/money as much as I figure I might as well use the fewest number of products and least volume total just to save a few trees and be a hippie. I have a 2012 Subaru Impreza base with a CVT. I just did my first oil change yesterday from whatever came in it from the factory to some cheap Citgo fully synthetic 0w-20 and API certified stuff I got at a local hardware store. I also replaced the Subaru oil filter with a Bosch 3300. Already I've noticed that the MPG is up quite a bit for whatever reason, it used to struggle at 30MPG highway and now easily gets 34/35 (well, from testing the day I've had it in lol.)

Anyway, what can I do to make this oil last the longest, and how long should I go before changing it? And after I DO change it, what oil should I use for the longest OCI and what filter? Price is no factor here.

I should mention that I am a relatively young man(20), so obviously it's not going to be like grammy is driving it or anything. However I'm fully aware it's not an M5 or one of the AMG series, so I don't try to drive it like that. The worst I probably do is floor it towards a light that I know turns red quickly, probably every day. That brings up another thing, I'll probably be adding 20+ miles on it every day on average (some days none, some days 60). I rarely take short trips, the closest source of food is many miles away and the only top tier gas is on my way to work. So usually at least 4 miles at a time.

Thanks for reading all of that, I'm good at wasting a lot of space with things that don't matter. Like this. And that. And this and that.

you need to change the oil every 7500 miles for the warranty.
after thats up.. just pick an extended drain oil and get a used oil analysis done at 7500 or so miles to see what condition the oil is in.

How are they going to know that it was for 7,500 miles?

I could leave it on a dyno for 500,000,000 miles and use the same oil the whole time and change it before I brought it in for being a pile of molten metal...

Can't a decent oil go for many more miles than 7,500? Like the millions of people on the internet that have at least a 12,500 mile OCI?

Because your going to keep track of the mileage on the oil and tell them. And they'll test it and tell you if you should run it longer or shorter than that.

OP meant the dealership...

They'll request oil receipts. They'll either deny your warranty or approve the teardown and stick you with the bill after they find evidence of your negligence.

With that being said, I haven't seen any extended drains on the new 2.0L FB, so it's impossible to say how long you can take a particular oil unless you send out a sample for analysis and find out for yourself. I can see a good synthetic making it to 10k miles, if there's a fair share of highway miles involved.

Two things: filter I do not know where you are in CA but you can get one oem for $7>Second: why don"t you avoid any waranty problems and keep receipts etc and just move along during the warranty? Why cheap Citgo oil as you said. How would they know? why bother with a problem that might come up??That is a issue you created?? The Subaru filter is really great for their motors. Why look for trouble ?Unless you are bored. And also have lots of time if problems occur.

To be clear you mean literally the receipt I got when I bought the oil, correct?

If I can't extend it past 7,500 miles can I use a Bosch distance plus filter for 2 OCs?

Also, if I was getting a repair do I have to bring the receipts all the time or would I wait and see if they say "Hey we see some odd wear on your cylinder (or something), and noticed you haven't had an oil change done here, did you do them and do you have receipts?"

For the receipt, yes, it would be wise to keep the original oil receipt in case it ever comes up with a warranty claim. Yes, such things are rare, and one can fight and argue, but it's better to not get caught with your pants down.

As for using the filter for two OCIs, see what the manual says. Some call for a new filter every second change. Some call for a new one at each oil change. Follow the manual recommendations in that regard. After all, Bosch isn't going to warrant your engine unless the filter itself fails when used as specified, not based upon using it twice (if contrary to the manual recommendations) because it's simply a high end filter.

Change it every 7500 with any full syn. But Mobil 1 and you will be good, I'd recommend pu (penzzoil ultra) and a good filter like Baldwin Donaldson or wix/ Napa gold, stay away from anything purolator.

You don't think your ODO works on a dyno????

Turning your car into junk prematurely doesn't help the environment very much. What school YOU went?

I would not go 15K on a Bosch D+. Thats pushing it. If you can afford a 2012 car, you can afford decent oil filters for each oil change.

Use PP from Walmart with a non Fram filter and do 7500 until out of warranty. Forget a UOA until 20K miles. Get a TBN as part of UOA, always.

You sprung for a 2012 Suburu, while its nice to do extended OCI to save money and resources, there will be time for that when the warranty expires.

If you want to be really green with your purchase, change the oil at 7500, other fluids as needed and keep driving it until it bends in half when they put it on a lift. And don't get in any accidents. If you total your car, its very non green as they need to spend energy and resources to make you a new one.

I would stick with 7500 mile OCI's for awhile (new engine break-in).
After 30K I'd use Mobil 1 EP or Amsoil SS and extend out to 15K if UOA's say it's OK.

How do you like the new Impreza?
I'm considering one and would like to know your thoughts on it...thanks

Couldn't say about the nice features of the limited or any of the options on all models. Basically got 4 wheels and a steering wheel. It's fine for MPG, that's about it.

During your warranty period, it's generally best to stick within the max allowable OCI and keep receipts and a mileage log detailing your service of the car. It can make any warranty claims go smoother.

Like gathermewool said, before going too far on any oil or filter, it's best to know what you're up against. Do a couple of UOA's and a couple filter dissections to determine what's safe. It's likely you'll be able to go 7500 miles and use your filter twice, but only YOU can say for certain.

^ they are lemons, seriously Subaru just had to buy my buddies back under the lemon law lol.

Buy a top of the line oil change special from one of the chain auto parts stores for $35 or so, and change it every 10k, or once a year whatever comes first.

No idea what you're talking about. They're great cars.

Why stay away from purolator?

And Subaru is the only manufacturer ever to be smacked on the knuckles by lemon laws?
