Hoping I can get some help here. I recently bought a used first gen Alexa and although both my wife and I have downloaded the Alexa app, we cannot seem to connect with it. When trying to connect the unit is showing the correct colors and it looks like it should connect. But it doesn't. Keeps saying 'I'm sorry, I can't connect to your wifi' or something similar. We've tried everything we can think of with no luck. Open to suggestions. Thanks!

Not sure why the pic loaded the way it did but you get the idea. ;)

Is your Wi-Fi network combining the 2.4 and 5 ghz bands into a single one? Some iot devices like this don’t like that, and you need to temporarily disable the 5 ghz band. It’ll lock onto the network, and after you can turn the 5 ghz back on.

I keep my bands separate for this reason. I used to service security and wifi devices. This issue used to come up a lot. Im not sure about today but I like being able to be sure devices I want on 2.5 stay there. An example is security cameras and related home devices, garage door, dead bolts, thermostats, security system. Even if capable of using 5 ghz I dont want them on 5 ghz. No need for it and range is better on 2.5.
5 is saved for our computers, TV's phones and being I have two 5 ghz bands, reserve one 5 ghz for me only. Mac desktop, iPhone, MacBook air.

My Nest was the same way. Had to un-connect them, set it up and then reconnect. Actually then I re-unconnected them as it was giving me problems on my security camera as well and I left ti that way with no detrimental effect on anything.

Why willingly put an eavesdropper in your home?
Do you have a smartphone, tablet, modern TV, etc ?
I agree with both statements.

You can turn off the microphone off on early model Alexa and actually all the way up to just recently. No longer can you, the microphone is always on. So no, I would NEVER own a new model Alexa. We do have one, used for one purpose only (since we got it for free many years ago) we use it to play streaming music to our dog when we go out for the day. This started when our last dog went blind, in order to comfort him. It sort of now carried over to our new puppy. However we always have the microphone switched off and once we get home I unplug it.

On my iPhone you can turn off the microphone, same with my MacBook Air. Our Sony TV is not allowed access to our WiFi network and our Roku boxes require you to push a button to do a voice search. Since we are an Apple family all I know is Apple and they make is VERY easy to control privacy concerns.

I do acknowledge very few American families use their privacy controls. So is the way of the world, for now anyway.

I mean even new cars track everything you do and possibly say. As I posted in another forum, Tesla banned a person who bought a used 2022 Model 3 car from using its super chargers. Denied access to them, as the registration has the car labeled as salvage, even though its in perfect condition. Tesla picks up on that salvage title and denies anyone with a salvage title access for fear of something going wrong. (safety)
EVERYTHING you do with that car is recorded and documented, plus they know where you are all the time. I dont know anything about Tesla's so maybe you can turn it off? Have no idea.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I'll talk to my wife tomorrow and see what we can do. To answer one of the questions we don't have a smart TV, but we do have 2 laptops and a tablet using wifi.
