In some rare instances a filter can alter oil flow. The filter itself ..by itself ..is highly restrictive to oil flow. It's only when the engine is enveloped and the back side of the media is "shored up" with back pressure that 99.999% of the filters turn invisible. In a situation where there is a worn pump or a loose pump, the flow characteristics simulate a pump in perpetual relief. This can translate to (for those with HLA's) lingering lifter noise until the oil warms ..and discovering that going to a looser filter reduces or eliminates the symptom.
So, on this I would give Arco the nod that one must give a broken clock twice a day.

Gee, I havent seen any footnotes and references from 99.99% of the posters comments. We are not crafting PhD thesis here. As an experienced automotive professional, if I cannot relate my first-hand experiences on this forum - what is its raison d'etre? and why the continued personal attack - do you have some god complex that requires therapy? An oil can only make very minor differences to solid lifter cam noise. They change viscosity a lot as they heat up, so being 10-20 times thicker when cold has some effect.
If you have hydraulic lifters, maybe a piece of debris was purged through.
If you have solid type, then you really should get the valves checked and adjusted.

Interesting theory. You've just listed the exact three types of filters I have on the shelf for this car; PureOne, Mobil 1 and Bosch! Maybe I'll try a Wix next time. I've heard they are pretty good and they certainly are cheap to buy!
Interesting side note, the same filter fits my Accord and fits my Yamaha FJR! That's why I've bought a number of them. The Mobil 1 fits the bike best while the PureOne and Bosch seem to seep a little oil from the seal. Using an auto filter on a motorcycle seems to work fine and has been done by lots of folks. The bike is out of warranty so that's no issue...

Real engines make some noise. Especially when cold.
I bought a 5 speed 2002 Accord brand new and had cold engine noise even on warm days after sitting for hours and complained to Honda and the dealer. I went for a ride with the service manager who turned out to be a guy I went to high school with and he told me they did that, the standards more so than the automatics. I was pis_ed. And Honda the corporation said you were already told they do that and told to take another one for a ride to confirm that so their attitude was tough s__t.
