How often do you replace shocks?

Monroe claims to have a "lifetime" warranty (like KYB), but they want documentation and generally make it a pain to make an adjustment on shot shocks. Gabriel Struts are available at ALL Autozone's. I have called the Gabriel tech. support line & they have been very helpful. I have Gabriel Ultras on the rear of My "01 Olds Alero" and they are surely a step-up from the stock garbage as the ride is very nice. I have an account with a place here in Buffalo,NY where I purchased My gabriels $45.00 each
with the lifetime warranty & consider the struts more than adequate for the car.

that screen will load with your original post and you can edit or even delete it.
 
westex39 is spot on. OEM shocks are good for 30,000 miles or say 40,000kms. Anybody into car knows this. My Koni's on the Mazda are totally shot and need rebuilding. Good shocks are rebuildable unlike cheapie stuff.
 
I have to strongly disagree with the OEM = 30k mile statement.

It depends on who the OEM supplier is, what kind of treatment they are subjected to, and what one's expectations are.

The OEM KYB's on the front of my wife's subaru are still tolerable well past 200k miles. I replaced the rears due to rust-induced spring cone failure at about 140k. I've owned cars that weren't tolerable at half the mileage. I install struts myself and I don't hesitate if it's needed.

I think that 75k - 100k would be a more reasonable generalization for most peoples' use.
 
i actually changed out OEM struts/shocks on a 03 mustang with 15,000 miles and they were completely blown. the car wasnt driven hard at all. you would push down on the strut and it wouldnt rebound, just sit. the shock you had to pull it out.
 
Tolerable IS good enough for a perfectionist like me, my standards are relatively high. I can see though why most people would think I'm crazy for thinking such old struts still handle fine, but they do. Don't get me wrong, if I were going to keep the car 5 more years I would have already replaced them, but at the rate it's rusting we'll keep it one more year, two years tops. I bought one of the struts on eBay a few years ago, I'm still waiting for the handling to get bad enough that I buy the other one. I actually find the < 100k old rear struts to be more lacking in damping, they are a little mushy. I should have used GR2's in the rear in hindsight, they are supposed to be a little stiffer. I really don't buy the safety argument, as SO many cars and SUVs come from the factory with suspensions far softer than this one is now. This car will still run circles around my Jeep in almost any situation. I'm much more nervous about my wife driving the Jeep, and it has nearly new shocks all the way around.

It simply boils down to all shocks/struts are not created equal, there is no one-size-fits-all answer, YMMV.
