We have a bought new 2005 4.6L V-8 Explorer and it's gotten some pan and filter changes plus complete ATF exchanges with the pan drops and filter changes. Everything has been done every 25,000-30,000 miles. Now with 195,000 miles on the original transmission it still shifts like new. Sure it costs some money for the maintenance but replacing the transmission costs A LOT more. This is assuming you plan on keeping your vehicle for a long time, like we do.

Agree Whimsey. plain on keeping. 2010 mountaineer from dealer one owner with all service records. Meticulous service 3-5,000 oil changes. I am following the same. Spotless body never seen winter no rust very rare up here in salt country.
