I'm pretty sure my last MC-FL400s oil filter was the cause of my engine startup rattle. I still have that filter and will be cutting it open in the near future. When I do cut it open, about how much oil should be in there? When I shake the filter I can't hear ANY oil sloshing around.

Probably none if the ADBV was bad. I just cut them with the dome down if I think there is oil inside and it stays in the can.

Wait, wasn't there just a thread that the FL-400S cured the start-up rattle??

On a 4.2L the FL-400s is one if the few filters that have the LEAST amount of start up rattle on a Ford application. The FL-820s has the about lowest startup noise on the 5.4s in our fleet.

I think the OP feels this specific filter was the cause not the model of filter, as according to his footnote he still has the same filter fitted.

Just a thought.

Not to be a nit-picker, but what 4.6 application takes the FL-400s? Did you mean 4.2L engine or did you mean the FL-820 filter? As far as start-up rattle, some engines are just prone to it but it doesn't hurt a thing.

And yes the FL-400S cured start up rattle on my Jeep when nothing else I tried would. I don't think it's your filter Blue, unless you just got a bad one, but put something else on there and find out.

If the ADBV is working perfectly, the entire guts should still be full of oil. Of course the center tube will not be if the filter is removed. See the ADBV test I did on a PureOne.
