How much money does YouTube pay ?

I would be interested in understanding how you came up with those estimates. I am also assuming this is gathered from publicly available information and so there is no issue of confidentiality.

I am wondering if you missed the fact that ETCG has two channels and you missed his main channel. That is the only way I can see he would be making less on youtube than ChrisFix. Eric makes lot more on his main channel than ETCG1 channel. I am thinking your numbers are for ETCG1 channel only. There is NO WAY he is paying for his cameraman from that money.

These are *my* tips as a *viewer* of automotive related channels if you want to succeed in this space.

1) Invest in good video camera which has good optical stabilization
2) Invest in a tripod
3) Learn tricks of editing
4) Make your video to the point
5) Show all the steps; if those are ancillary, use editing and zip through them. Slow down and show any problems that you encounter along the way
6) There is no reason to put fancy music. I am not watching your music videos.
7) Show ALL NECESSARY and NO UNNECESSARY stuff
8) Figure out your strength and concentrate on that specific field

I have found few new channels which I hope succeed in the long run. I will provide a list later.

The numbers for ETCG are for his main channel. I didn't include numbers for ETCG1, as it's really not worth mentioning at this point (not many views). ETCG has 850k subs, ChrisFix has 1.25million. ETCG gets 500 new subscribers per day, while ChrisFix is averaging about 3k.

The main ETCG channel gets about 125k views per day, or 3.7million per month. Using the rough estimate of $1/1k views, you can see what the numbers come out to.

On the other hand, ChrisFix is seeing about 380k views per day, and 10-11 million views per month. If it is still just a hobby, it is a more lucrative hobby than a lot of people's jobs.

ETCG does have a cameraman, but he surely isn't full time - so how often does he pay him? Does he use ETCG's camera, or his own? How much does he make an hour? I have also noticed that he still does his own camerawork from time to time. ETCG also still does his own editing, as far as I'm aware.

The subscriber and view count info is all available to the public. I'm using my own experience to put dollar values on it.
 
A co-worker of mine, his wife does YT videos. From what I gather, its a LOT of work. She's a stay at home, but it almost a full-time job. Making new material, filming, editing, etc... IMHO, it either starts as a hobby and grows AND/OR for younger individuals with more "free-time" on their hands.

It sounds like a sweet gig, but consider the number of users posting videos and the amount of content. I think the YT celebrities are in a very, very tiny group. The biggest problem I hear is keeping subscribers interested in your content and that can be tough when your content is very narrow or specialized.

I was curious about that guy pewdiepie... I have a good and broad sense of humor (still remember ebaumsworld). This is what people are watching now, mind you I'm only in my early 30s.

I follow close to hundred automotive related channels and now you mentioned it, I started looking the subscribers and views and ChrisFix blows every one else.

I was not expecting that at all. Incidentally, he does NOT do any stupid or drama filled videos either (well except once on an April Fool's day!)

Frankly, I am seeing the data with my own eyes but I am not believing it if you get my drift. Is it possible to dissect the data in to different geographical regions?
 
Subscribers does not equal views or ad-clicks... it certainly helps to have them. One guy said the problem after a while is a high % of subscribers don't come back to watch your material.

I think ChrisFix appeals to a broader audience. People who watcher ScannerDanner will watch ChrisFix, but I'm not sure if everyone who watches CF will watch SD. The same, but different.

ChrisFix's channel has exploded over the past 12-18 months.

You can view geographical data (by country) inside of your own YT account, but I don't think that info is public anywhere.

It sure does take a long time, but not nearly as long as it used to. I used to develop & print both B/W & color in the darkroom. Further, I made skateboard movies with friends during the 70's with a FILM movie camera, then spliced to edit. Later I used both VHS, Beta & Sony Hi-8 analog technology, then edited on an analog deck. Stills and captions were done with a camera, then edited in. Then we had to add the sound-track.......back in the mid-80s for documentaries. At least we didn't have to develop the film.....

My point is every *^&%$ with a cellphone thinks they're an internet STAR!! Lousy composition, no focus control, exposure, background control, off axis, poorly/unevenly lit, tilted-axis, shakes, no editing....just garbage.

Edgy is "cool" for about 20s....then it's just junk, stupid, immature, and dweeb: Pure junk.

Got Tripod? Got Fluid-head? Got graycard? Got real videocam? Pulled focus?

A lot of you folks are missing the most important aspect when it comes to half decent YT channels with at least 100k minions...and that is: donations.

At some point AVE was pulling 10k/mo just from patreon.

ETCG is only making about $3k/month on YouTube. I'm sure he's making more from endorsements and sponsors on the side, though.

Eric, from South Main, is pushing $1k/month. He's steadily building his numbers.

These are all estimates, based on view rates and averages. Only the guys cashing the checks truly know what they're making. YouTube profit varies and is based on viewer engagement with ads placed on the videos.


10K a month is only supplemental income? You must be from new york city. Down here that would buy you a small mansion.

I made $300 in 8 years. Guess I'm not as big as some real youtubers haha.

I am going to start publishing more content, though. I'm sure I'll be able to make $300 in 6 years!
 
I remember making just under $100 (IIRC) in two-years... it was some amount that you had to be over (minimum) for them to send you a payment. Said screw that and removed all the ads from my vids. I never intended on taking it anywhere, just figured a little money for vids I had already made would be cool.
 
Merck's BITOG posts are barely (sometimes not) tolerable. Don't think it he would make it on YouTube.....
