How much metal should I find in an oil filter?

Yep. An oem cam is like $700, plus another $200 in followers? now multiply that fact by the brake dust shields that just fell off, and add in 23mpg. So I am in rush here… cheaper than a new car for sure, so I’ll wind up doing the job, but I am going to wait for it to warm up a hair I think.
 
There must be quite a few good stock cams swapped out for some more spicy ones over the years? I guess if you can figure which part numbers will fit, if you pass an import shop with lots of honda's parked outside, you might get a stock cam for not much?
For now though I might through some 5W40 in there. My buddy has been running similar cams in his jetta tdi for quite a while with 15W40, but he doesn't winter drive it.

I’m going to replace lifters on my OM602 diesel before too long. I hear ya.

Yeah, I should hit up a shop (or Importapart? he makes good videos) for a cam. They have to be out there, and all I need is a decent cam with decent followers. Some day.

Meanwhile my son is learning about the fun of shopping CL. He's window-shopped no small amount of Jeeps, and now seems to be onto Tacoma's. It's enjoyable to hear. :) I plan to steer him towards an XB if I can, that's something I might be able to repair, and get the mpg he wants.
 
I would run it as is with heavier viscosity oil - we ran 5w20 in our K but we dumped it at 100k. Not sure how heavy you can go there.
 
5W30 seems to be slowing it down? I cut open the last filter (no pics) and it seemed fine, this run seems also to have low metal content--or I should say, no chunks visible. Maybe a UOA would say otherwise. 4,400 miles (weather was nice, figured I'd take advantage). Trying to limit it to local usage, so it tends to get 10 mile trips.

Filter was pretty clean.

Filters seem to slice open ok--last one I took off after only 1,000 miles as I had a bad oil leak, so I swapped it in high hopes that it was the infamous Fram filter woes. Nope, shop says it was valve cover gasket and oil pressure sending switch. Authorized the repairs as it was not big money and may cut back on the mess in my driveway.

They noticed the bad cam (hard to miss!) and will get me an estimate to swap heads and timing set. I said it was fine to get me a quote but that I wasn't sure if I wanted to go down this route at this time.
 
I'd be hitting the pick-n-pull type yards, if you live in an area where there are several of them. I'm guessing it's pretty quick to pull the valve cover, especially if you have a battery-powered impact wrench.

When my Odyssey front cam went bad, they were on backorder, so that's what I did. Had to open up a few to find a good one! Four-cylinder should be easier, I think.

Kind of burns me up that Honda makes a bunch of second-rate cams and then hikes the price on the replacement part for their own poor workmanship.
 
I'll wait for their estimate. It does not look like an easy job if the timing set has to be done--I tried to get in there to pull the tensioner cover and it was such a pain that I gave up. I have no idea how this would be done in vehicle, short of me spending a few days pulling parts--and at this time, I can't have this vehicle parked for a week let alone a month while I mess with broken bolts, broken connectors and everything else that can go sideways on a job like this.
 
I recently opened the used media on my previous f150 2.7v6 with 3k on it. I would say 50-75 of the tiniest metallic “sparkles” were visible total. That engine had 78k on it - so 1/3 of the mileage and twice the material. You’re probably doing ok.

It’s doable in a day. I really doubt it’s worth the repair cost quote to repair, but I could be wrong.
