How much is your vehicle tag in your state ?

Two of my vehicles are due for renewal in June. In the PR of NY, my 2016 Malibu is $66.50 and my 2015 Versa is $39. It's every 2yrs in NY.

When Jesse Ventura was our governor in Minnesota years ago, he thought it was ridiculous how much tabs were for his Porsche. For a little while, all passenger vehicles were a flat 99 dollars, until it was old enough to be the minimum. That went away shortly after he left office, but I will say that was one of the best things he ever did as Governor. He also did surplus checks, all budget surplus cash the state received was given back to taxpayers. He got a lot of flak, some deserved, but he wasn't a terrible governor.

In NH registration and inspection is due on the month of your birthday. Reg fees are based on the current value of the vehicle. I paid about $700 this year on two trucks (a 2014 and 2003) and a trailer (2018). Only a tiny fraction of that cost goes towards the local roads.

Michigan charges property taxes vehicle registration based on value. It's a progressive tax, more expensive the car, the more you pay. No relation to the actual cost of the registration.

Here in Georgia I get 1 free every year as a vet and the others are 20.00 each.
Check with your tag office. There are medals that qualify as well as different campaigns. I have 3 different free ones.

The deputy registrar is only allowed a fee of $5.00 with the rest consisting of locally imposed permissive taxes. The HEV, PHEV and EV charges are then applied.
The permissive tax where I live is $20.00, so I end up paying $51.00 plus the $100.00 on the HAH.
I don't have the breakdown of the fees but I do have my "receipts" and here's what I paid in February and March for our cars:

I'm in Georgia and we pay a tax when the vehicle is purchased so we don't have to pay a annual ad valorem each year. I am a veteran so I get a veteran plate which is free. I think my annual vehicle registration costs me $1.00. If I didn't have the veteran plate then it would be an additional $20. If I submit my registration by mail it's another dollar. I'm cheap and I like to flirt with the girls at the tag office so I hand-carry my paperwork to the tag office each years and save the dollar mail-in fee and shoot the breeze with the staff.
In Virginia, we pay 4% (used to be 3%) at purchase and a certain percentage of the NADA wholesale value every year until the car is 20 years old. It's fairly costly to have a new car here.

Ours goes up every year because of the HD lobby living in our state assembly.

My pickup is up to $110 due to state and local fees (was always the cheapest ride)

My little ancient car has been $185-$205 because our state reps are retarded.

Very tempted to put non-expiring collectors plates on it but it’s such a beater I’m worried it might die any time and my insurance has dropped other cars when I switch plate types.

Okay, so where you live the locality has applied the maximum allowable permissive tax, the registrar fee is $5.00 and you've made a five dollar donation.
Your renewal to the left must have involved a HEV.
I'm not counting the $5 donation. It's the $65-ish amount ($66.59 to be exact) I was referring to earlier and then the hybrid has a flat, add'l amount of $100, totaling $166.59.

Not that it matters 'cause our reps don't care, but I've contacted them about the extra fee for the hybrid (it's the principle, not the money) and there is a proposed bill to remove it. It's been around for 3+ years though and goes nowhere.... At least some of them acknowledge/realize that hybrids use gas and pay fuel/road taxes !

Do the math on just how much fuel you'd have to save with your HEV to avoid paying $100.00 in fuel taxes to compensate the state for its loss of revenue.
It's absurd.
Also, I did explain to you that $30.00 of what you paid was the permissive tax allowed to be charged by the locality in which you reside. It is not a charge by the state for vehicle registration.

I know some hybrids save a substantial amount of fuel and benefit from the savings to offset this fee, but in our case, it doesn't. 🤣 Does the hybrid version get better fuel economy than the gas ? Sure.... In our case, my wife's hybrid SUV gets worse fuel economy than her previous car (100% ICE), so she's spending more on fuel !

Then the answer for Ohio is $31-36, depending on location. I'll bet every locality adds "permissive taxes" though, including yours, but it's just not as much as ours. Some may be adding more. Since the original question was how much each "state" charges though, Ohio is $31-36, I guess.

Like $70, just 1 time charge for z tag. If it's older than maybe 10 years.
Have 1 that was free with disabled vet plates. The other 5 or 6 are "z" tag. (Lifetime)

Indiana bases it on the MSRP of the vehicle. They start out expensive then get cheaper. But EV’s get slapped with a $230 fee on top everything and hybrids get $77 slapped on.

Ohio's gas tax is .385/gallon.
So, $100.00 equals around 260 gallons of gas.
A 50 mpg HEV would use 400 gallons to travel 20,000 miles while a similar gasser would use maybe 572 gallons.
So the fuel your not using and paying tax on with the HEV would be around 172 gallons, or about $66.00, so the state gives itself a $34.00 tax bonus while also doing a lot to negate the cost savings involved in driving a hybrid.
In the words of the Pretenders, Heh Ho Way to go Ohio.

PA. annual registration fees
passenger cars $45.
motorcycles $24
pickup trucks, depending on GVWR, $77 to $202.

Plus $5 on each to the county of residence. Just because.

No vehicle property tax. State fuel taxes are on top of the heap. Both at the pump and the 4 big increases at distribution (which are passed to end buyer). Good way to hide your real state fuel tax rate in a nationwide comparison chart. Strict annual safety inspections for all, emissions check for most, visual emissions check for all as part of safety inspection.
