How much for a cheap paint job?

The paint on my truck is a little rough, to say the least.

I have been thinking about painting it myself, but I don't really have a good place to do it. I know I can get a crappy Macco for around $300, but I think that includes more than one coat. Does anybody have an idea of what it would cost to just have them quickly spray on one coat? I just want it to be a solid color again.

stay away from maaco trust me u could do better by just buying many cans of spray paint and doing it yourself

Do some searching for a similar discussion we've already had on this, as we covered the options pretty thoroughly there. I know that thread included the topics "Maaco,paint, primer" so that should probably be your search.

Edit: I just took my own advice and looked for this thread, without finding it. Does anyone else remember it?

I vaguely remember seeing a paint job listed for a medium size car for either $99 or $199. The biggest part of a paint job is the prep and masking off of the glass, the painting is the quick part. The old paint would need to be prepped/sanded to create a "tooth" for the new paint to stick to. Then everything masked off not needing paint. It would probably depend on how good of a paint job you would want.

When I painted an old ranch work truck I had, myself, I rough sanded the paint, masked off the glass, and "spit" on the paint with a twelve dollar paint gun and a 1912 model air compressor. Total cost was about $50 for everything. Looked decent from far off, but up close, the paint dried with bubbles and bumps in it, like velcro. If you tried to do a "Bo Duke" hood slide over it, you either stuck in place or your pants ripped. Was interesting. I sure wish I had that old truck back...........

Actually if you're having the whole car painted, do the prep work yourself then bring the car to maaco. I hear that the problem with Maaco is that they don't spend the time to prep the car properly, and they have problems matching paint colors.

If you think about it, car painting is a skill that is learned through experience. these guys that paint cars at maaco go through a LOT of cars. if you do the prepwork yourlself you'll probably get a decent job on relatively inexpensive work.

Grab some Astroturf from the Astroturf store, cut it to fit thine various body panels, apply a glue capable of withstanding the elements, and strategically place the Astroturf to cover all exposed body panels, leaving the vital openings exposed, of course.

No worry about waxing!!!!!!

You can boast of your lean green pavement-pounding machine!!!!! Females will swoon while males look on with envy.

You may have to chase the occasional golfer away now and then who is putting upon thine hood but.... tis a small price to pay for thine uniqueness.

Do you get rid of your house if it needs to be painted?

Then why dispose of a vehicle if it needs it?

Anyway, if you price just the materials for a repaint it will be $300-$500. You can do as posted above, all the prep work and allow the body shop to spray the vehicle. You can provide them with the finish materials and they will charge you the time for labor. You will get no warranty since you are basically doing the work yourself.

I had the BMW repainted a couple of years ago at a local chain called One Day. I am very satisfied with the $500 job. This is what I call a "five foot" paint job. Meaning that it looks perfect at five feet away, perfectly acceptable for an older car. The few minor defects are actually very hard to spot even at close range.

I have even used Earl Sheib for a cheap repaint on a van that I couldnt sell, unitl it had a fresh coat of white paint. "I'll paint any car for only $29.95, riiiiiiight."

I realized the other day when I saw an old beater that primer gray, red and black equals the old-school Audi Sport colours and can be configured in a nice stripe or a paralellogram.

For 50$ in tremclad and tape you can have this.

I used a Wagner electric paint gun which really sucked, it turns out these paint guns have been around for ever but they are being marketed as new. The paint job looked okay but it took about a month to harden. The stripes were put on with a paint brush. The K-car hubcaps would disapear once in a while but were pretty easy to find.

The second picture is just before Athena got crushed. I nearly ran a kid over when the brakes went so I had her turned into a bunch of washing machines.
