I have used oil in my 60's vintage car that was more than 10 years old and didn't seem to have any issues. Would hate to have to dispose of unopened oil just becuase its been here for awhile

Mobil tells us 5 years, I'm going to assume it's same for others. That's also CYA on their part.

Also, theres a test of some '80s vintage oil that was used in a car and UOA and it looked perfectly fine. Thirty year old oil may be stretching things but the point is that oil doesn't turn into pumpkin juice after 3-5 years in storage nor sometimes in a crankcase. The UOA, or a VOA will tell the tale.

How many years ?

You talk about cost yet you run an oil for years in a engine that costs thousands ?

I have seen oil additives settle out of bottles -- in less than years

yet you will run an oil for years
wow

Well, the 2700 hp ALCO has a 600 gallon sump. That oil got run as long as the testing lab said the oil was good. Other engines have larger sumps. Very large engines might have 30 tons of oil in their crankcase and keep the same oil for 20 years with continuous centrifuging and periodic lab tests (these engines have the combustion space sealed from the crank case). So, it all depends....
