How Many Miles before a First Oil Change

I made it to 170 on our new Forester. Then took it on a 400 mile trip! I have some SF HDS-5 on the way, and will do the front and rear differentials as soon as I get it. Auto transmission...I'll leave that alone for at least 15000 miles. Oh, noticed this transmission has a filter on it that looks very similar to a regular spin-on oil filter. Very nice!
 
600 miles on the 1st oil and filter change~TSUV & Redline. 16,500 on the trans~ Redline. 18,700 on the differential~ Redline.
 
My RSX manual says not to change before normal interval. Since it might be special oil, I'm going to 2000mi, change up to 5000 then 5k (severe) OCIs. 2000, 3000 & 5000 mile intervals. If anyone knows more about the Honda break-in oil, tell me or link, thanks.

Honda/Acura uses Special Break-in Oil , you are not suppose to change it right away , when I asked someone I know at Honda he said the oil is really expensive and let it stay in the Engine for 7500 miles , I will ask again on Monday to be sure of the miles.
 
My 06 Civic EX Sedan 5MT got its 1st oil change today at 4221 miles. i just couldnt leave that black stinking nasty stuff in the car any longer.

Dumped the oil out of the engine and tranny. Filled the engine back up with super tech 5w-30 witha super tech filter. filled the tranny back up with 10w-30 super tech. Drove 45 miles and dumped those fluids. Filled the engine up with M1 5w-20 with a M1 filter. Put Honda MTF back into the tranny. Checked all the other fluids and gave the car a very good inspection. Will rotate the tires sunday. It didnt seem to use any oil visualy on the stick at all. I drained the oil thru a coffe fiter type media thats not as fine as a coffe filter. I did fines some small particals and sealent type matrial. Very small size stuff. some hard to the touch and others elastic. the Civic has responded to the oil change very nicely. The engine is quiter and its shifts smoother.

While I was at it I changed the oil and filter in the Ranger. Checked the tranny fluid (5MT,, rear seal weeps just a tad at 125k miles)Rotated the tires and went thru my standard checks with it. I did put super tech 5w-30 syn. in it. Along with a super tech oil filter. It didnt like M1. Would use a qt. between oil changes at apprx. 5k miles. So its had motorcraft in it for years. Engine seemed to respond to the Wally World syn well.

I'm going to do a flush too. I'll probally do it with the old filter and some Delo 30. I'll just drive it to the dealer, maybe for a day or two. I'll let them take off the old filter, which might be tough and fill it with their oil. I'll probally drain that stuff out in favour of a high-moly oil. Havoline 5w-30 or 5w-20. I wanted to go with my Havoline Synth, but think if I am changing out early, about 2000mi, I should go with high moly and Havoline synth does not have it.

I talked to the Honda guy I know and he said leave the Factory oil in till the first scheduled maintenance or at least 5000 miles , he said it will benefit from the additives the Factory puts in it , maybe that's what he is told , do not know for sure but I thought I would let you know.
 
I've purchased 4 cars brand new and all of them got their factory fill dumped no later than 1,000 miles and so far no problems at all. Then again, i follow a 3,000 OCI religiously.

My current car (2001 mazda v6) was purchased new with 200 miles on the clock. I dumped it at 500 miles just because it had a few miles on it and it had been sitting on the dealers lot for about 6 months. I've changed it at 3,000 miles since using a variety of oils (all dino or semi/hydrocracked). The car has 43,000 on it now and still runs like new (which i would expect no less).

While i've used a number of different oils my main oil of choice has been Motorcraft 5w30 which my car seems to like. Since i just turned over 40K i did a rapid change of a 500 mile OCI just to clean out anything that was hiding in their. From what i can see through the oil filler cap the internals look clean as the day i bought it.

I had the first power flush of the auto tranny at 24K and will again at 48K and every 24K thereafter. Still shifts silky smooth. At the first change they used Motorcraft Mercon V which i think made a bit of a positive difference, and I'll stick with that.

Also had the coolant flushed at the 24K marker and will continue to do that at 24K intervals. I'll wait till 75K to flush the brake and power steering fluid and also do the timing belt.
 
Dang, Roger, my treatment of mine exactly! Dumped the factory fill at 500, just went to Motorcraft 5W20 at 2000, and Hyunda gives me a freebie at 3750. At 5000 miles, it's some kind of oil or another with a 5000 mile OCI from there on. The frequent changes at the start being the theory of ridding the engine of break-in metals and casting sand, if any right from the start.

Dumped the factory fill the first three days on the coolant, too, but THAT is another nightmare. And on a brand-new car, too.

I just hit 1000 miles on my new Mazda3 5-door with the 2.3 liter motor and am taking the car to the dealer tomorrow for a couple of small items. I was planning on having them change the oil at the same time before going onto the recommended 5000 miles between changes.

I was told by the dealer service manager that the motor came factory-filled with a synthetic blend which made me wonder if the motor will take longer to break in properly on the first batch of oil. If so, then I was wondering about whether I should go on and change the oil now at 1000 miles and increase my interval from there, or wait until 3000 or even a full 5000 to purge out the factory-filled oil.

Folks make too big of a deal about this. Have the oil changed for the first time as prescribed in your owner's manual. It's a waste of time & oil to change it too early.
 
I went with a 2500mi change. Flushed, filled with (mostly) high-moly Havoline 5w-20, same 400ppm moly as Honda FF oil. I added a bit of VSOT and will add more when I go to the moly-less Havoline synth. That's it, FYI.

I agree with you 100% because when I was growing up my dad changed the oil every 3k on new cars and left the factory oil in there for 3k. no oil related engine failures. However, I have a new vibe and will change the factory fill out at 500 miles just to get the factory wear metals out. I know it's not hurting anything. So I can start trending UOAs on this car
 
I changed my new cars at 1000 miles (I don't think there is as much wear during the break-in period as there used to be), then normal intervals after that (3k-6K for me...).

If it's a Honda/Acura, then I don't know, I'd consider leaving that break-in oil in for the 3.75K called for under "severe service"...

Is there a way too just get the metal shavings out without changing the oil? Can a filter handle most of it?
