How Many Miles before a First Oil Change

I went on and told them to change the oil since they have the car for the day anyway and I had a $5 off coupon. Get all the tiny little casting residues and metal bits out. I'll go 3000 on the second fill, if not a full 5000.

Nickd, Honda doesn't use a special break-in oil. The heavy moly content that shows in first-change UOAs is due to liberal use of an engine assembly lube at the factory.

What they do is mix some of their molybdenum disulfide paste into regular motor oil, and then slather that on parts they consider vulnerable to scuffing prior to putting stuff together.

Honda recommends that you create your own "assembly lube" in this manner in many of their service manuals. Grab one and you'll see.

For the first OCI I change new vehicles or equipment at half of the reccommended severe duty service requirement.
Example Subaru H-6 half of severe(3750) 1875. factory reccomends 1st at 3000.
Kubota diesel change first time at 100 hours so thats 50...no severe duty requirement.
Ford powerstroke diesel 02 7.3 change at 1500 miles. norm is 5000 severe is 3000
etc.etc.etc

What about leaving the Honda factory oil in and putting on a low micron rating Amsoil Eao oil filter or Mobil 1.

This would leave most of the "special Honda" oil in but take out the wear pariticles. Then run it out to 3-5000 miles.

pretty close to rogerk.... 's schedule. around 500, then 2000, then 3 changes at 3k intervals on dino, then to synthetic. friends/ neighbors over the years used to kid me about it being overkill. when you spend 20, 30,or 40 k on a car, what's a few bucks for 2 more early oil changes ? i've converted several people to this schedule, after showing them an opened oil filter, and they couldn't believe the amount of metal in it. of course a dealer will tell you to wait for 5000 mi., as they could care less about you , or your car.commom sense, people. but, to each his own.
