I have a 1990 kawasaki KLR250. It's watercooled and uses the same oil for the engine and trans. I put some temperature stickers on the case and the radiators to keep an eye on temps.

I have never seen the engine oil past 160F.

The rad does have a cooling fan that comes on @ 185F. I have seen it get to 212F which is touching the red on the stock temperature guage.

Anyway I really don't consider 212F hot an I have been running Rotella 15w40 in it. Been changing it every 300 miles or so.

Should I keep doing it @ 300 miles or go longer?

I'm wondering how long to run 4oz ARX in my engine, AC Suzuki 750, the sight glass is clean, bike is very clean,23k. Rotella. I figure just run as long as possible, all summer???

300 miles seems awful short. Unless that is all off road miles I think you are wasting good oil. If you aren't running all that hard I would change it every 1000 miles.

I realize that it's apples to oranges, but I usually change the oil in my GSX-R600 every 1000 - 1500 miles.

Oh I forgot to mention 99% dirt/Dust.

I let the airfilter go 1000miles W/O checking it and could not believe the dirt on it. I don't know how it was breathing through it.

what is the sump capacity?

I always believe that clean fresh oil is always better. Especially if in very dusty/dirty conditions.

1000 miles and cleaning the air filter regularly would be wise.

on my crf i change about every 2-3 rides. motor side is 690ml, transmission side is 600ml. so around 1.5 quarts.

I change out pretty regularly as under a quart on each side is not very much, so I prefer to have fresh oil in there pretty frequently.
