I can confirm Honda Canada is a Fram part as well, although I thought it was Allied Signal that made them.....perhaps I have the Honda US OEM and Honda Canada OEM confused....

Did Quaker State filters recently change to fram? At the place you can find Quaker State filters around here, they are clearly a Purolator filter.

In the US, the Quaker State filters are all now made by Purolator. A few years ago they were made by Fram.

Up in Canada though, our Quaker State filters are still Frams, you can clearly see the cardboard endcaps in them.

Patman's assertions regarding the QS filters are correct. The only current difference between them and the Purolators here in the US is the Green paint.

Honeywell is the owner of the Fram brand. (now digging through their site) Bendix bought Fram in the 60's, then Autolite in the 70's. Allied bought Bendix in the 80's. Finally, Allied merged into Honeywell in 99.

Anyone else crossing their fingers?

Thanks OneQuart. I was about to ask that Allied/Fram thing. Also, if you guys run across Carquest filters, I was told by Carquest store owners that their filters are made by Fram also.

Hello Guys,

For your informations, Clarcor purchased Hastings Filters in September 1995.

Before that, Hastings Filters was owned by Hastings Inc, a famous engine piston rings manufacturer.

Rob! Thanks for clearing that up. I wondered what was going on with regard to the two sharing space. So is Hastings now just a brand within Baldwin or did Clarcor get other assets as well?

David

Hello Ken,

Hoover is not wrong, they are just not very accurate.

Purolator Filters used to be a very big filter manufacturing company that had several division across the world.

Those division got sold to different companies over time.

Purolator , the company that has Automotive Filters was sold several times since 1985.

Purolator Courier used to own them, got spin off as an independant company, then sold to Pennzoil, then Dayco (Mark IV) and then Arvin.

They are presently owned by Arvin/Meritor.

Purolator Industrial, Purolator Facet was sold to Clarcor ( These division make filters for the Avionics, Petro-Chemical and other Industrial sectors).

I hope that this clears things up

Best regards

Rob

Baldwin told me that their Hastings line is identical to the Baldwin line except for the label. They said that their Casite line is lower quality. They also said that they make the Amsoil line, but ask Amsoil for the quality details. Of course, Amsoil says that they're the best. I didn't ask about Clark, and didn't know that Clarcor is the parent corporation. http://www.hoovers.com/cgi-bin/offsite?site=HBN&url=http://www.clarcor.com (Hoover's says that Purolator is one of Clarcor's brands, and I think that's an error.)

Oz, you can add Honda USA oil filters to that list as well. -Joe

joee12 Thanks, I forgot about Honda USA.

liquidballbearing I spoke to two Carquest stores here in Quebec, and both told me their Carquest filters are made by Fram. I guess in this case, it's different across the border.

Anyone know who makes Hamp filters? These filters are SUPPOSE to be OEM for Honda, and I suppose the rest of the Japanese market. Hamp, is only available in Japan...I think. But weren't they used by Honda USA before switching to Fram?

Regards,

Oz

Oz, one of our old parts stores sold out to Carquest a few months ago. I had asked them who made their filters and they said Wix. After your post the other day I asked the Carquest one town over. They said Wix too.

Some quick google searches turned up many links with carquest & wix. Nothing with fram hinted at a relationship. Here are a couple:

"Wix was presented with the CARQUEST Order Fill Award at the CARQUEST Quarterly Meeting held in Raleigh, N.C., May 21. Wix is the exclusive manufacturer of CARQUEST’s line of Premium Blue Filters."
http://www.dana.com/news/pressreleases/prpage.asp?page=1100

"In addition to the WIX Filters light-duty line, silicone anti-drainback valves also are incorporated in the NAPA Gold- and CARQUEST Blue-branded filters produced by Wix."
http://www.wixfilters.com/news/article.asp?NewsID=413&Section=5

"CARQUEST Filters are manufactured by WIX Filters and offer a complete..."
http://www.carquest.com/engine.htm

Like you said though, it could be a border thing.

Call this Dana Wix rep in Ontario:

Looks like he'd know.

If true, can't believe Toyota would do something that stupid!

Toyota's been doing a lot of stupid things lately, just look at the Echo!

Toy4x4, we are splitting hairs here somewhat with regard to full-flow filter quality. Over the long haul I'd be worried, but since the first filter gets changed out within 1000 miles it shouldn't matter.

I wish more manufacturer choices could be rectified so easily and for so little cost.

OneQuartLow,
From what I've read on other threads, Fram is a maker not use for quality reasons.

"Over the long haul I'd be worried, but since the first filter gets changed out within 1000 miles it shouldn't matter."
I'm sorry, but I don't understand this part. Could you explain, please?
