Who makes oil filters for Saturn vehicles? I believe that it is FRAM but I figured that I would check. And who makes oil filters for GM, Ford, Toyota, etc.? How many companies actually make oil filters? The ones that I know of are Dana Corp (Wix), Purolator, FRAM, and Champion Labs. I believe that Hastings, Baldwin, and Clark (locomotive) oil filters are made by another company, but I can't remember the name. And of course Fleetguard are made by a divison of Cummins.

Ford filters (motorcraft brand) are made by Purolator to Ford's specs. They essentially end up being a Purolator Pure One with the bypass valve moved to the inlet end of the filter (no flow over contaminated pleats carrying extra junk into the engine) and a heavier case.

My 02 Cavalier, using the Ecotec 4 that Saturns use, came with a made in France Purlux 264A. For a while, both AC and Fram were selling the identical filter, part numbers, mold numbers, and all. It uses a distinctive zig zag pleat allowing it to cram 138 sq. in. of filter media into a very small package. I am afraid the STP I paid $8 for doesn't have that much. Likely it is the same cheapy that comes in an orange box now. Aruuuuuuuuuugh!

Manual Man says I can buy filters at a Saturn dealer for $5. If what they are selling has the zig zag pleats, I would stick with them.

Here are other numbers I have picked up. I am hoping now that I have the WIX and Hastings numbers, my local dealer has them even if their book doesn't list my car.

ACDelco PF2244G
Hastings LF548
Purflux L264A
Purolator L 15436
Baldwin P1445
STP S9018R
WIX 51365

labman, can you tell if that high quality oil filter you mentioned is available foe a 2001 Saturn SL2? I have never heard of it myself. I am pretty sure that the oil filter available at Saturn dealerships for my car is made by FRAM. I do not want to have anything to do with FRAM, even though many years ago that was my oil filter of choice. Maybe Saturn has upgraded their oil filters? Personally, I kind of have a problem with using an oil filter that is made in France, but if it is available for my car and is high quality, I will get over it. This is the best web site for car maintenance I have ever found. Products I have tried that people at this web site seemed to like have really worked for me. I would not mind using a dealership oil filter again if it was high quality. But the Saturn oil filters I have used in the past caused my car engine to make noise and run rough at start-up. I just did not like them. Of course, maybe Saturn has enough weight so that even if the oil filters are made by FRAM, Saturn can require a certain level of quality. If that French oil filter you mention in your post has that amount of filtering material, it would be great for people using Auto-RX to clean their engines.

MANN HU 69/2 will fit.

Mystic, it's made in Germany, so perhaps you don't want this one too

Sorry I was gone all weekend and didn't answer. I think I covered it in my reply to your next post. After a miserable drive in rain and ice Friday night, I had great visit at a dog guide school. I like the way everybody here works at sharing info.
