Hello to all,

I just replaced my 89' Camry's air filter using a Fram oranf box version and I was wondering how long you think the typical air cleaner filter should be replaced???

On the box it indciated the "12,000 mile tune up" BUT is this a realistic figure????

Looking at the replaced filter it had a small but even light gray coating through out the filter element so I can't say if my car really needed to be replacment. The last time I went on this filter was about 6 months. Is this a realistic time to swap it out???

Any and all coments are appreciated.

LT4 Vette,

WOW you see no gain?? Even after 30K your filter must be like cake frosting!!!!

OH well if your car doesn't accumulate that much in a years time then you fine dude.

For myself I think I'll do mine every 6 months or more or less.
The gas price here in Los Angeles is abou $4.60/gallon so saving/getting as much gas mileage is very important to me.

I go 25 to 30k unless the mice force a change. (never notice any gas savings with new vs old).
To date not a lot of aftermarket Air filters for the Taco. From the dealer cost of a filter was just less than shipping for a Amsoil filters. I now have 2 Amsoil filters in stock.

Gregory,

Even the though you can go 25-30K I can't really afford to do that. My recently replaced air filter wasn't really dirty BUT it won't last that long in your car. Besides gas here in Los Angeles is NOW $4.80/gallon so the thirteen bucks for an orange box Fram Filter is cheap insurance to help me get the most MPG out of my 89'Camry.

I just watched a TV news segment about saving gas. A parts store manager said to replace the air filter every second oil change or 6000 miles.I think this guy just wants to move some inventory....

25-30,000 miles on hard roads here in FL. At 30,000 the filter still looks good but, I change anyway. When I drove dirt farm roads I changed at 10-12,000 miles. I feel the owners manual recommendations are generally very good except in very unusual circumstances.

Durango,

I have never , ever in my life time seen a bump in gas milage with a new Purolator, Fram, STP or Wix air filter installed.

It's variable by location and can vary from change to change. Just have a replacement filter ready when you check the filter so you can pop in the new one if needed. .02.

FZ1,

For the best possible gas mileage I'm just gonna change mine out every 6 months. Here in Los Angeles the gas price is $4.86/gallon of regular!!!

If the car using ECM with air flow meter, I dont think changing new filter will improve mileage except the old one is totally clogged up. The new filter should improve response, but may also reduce mileage in certain cases.

Only car with traditional carb will improve mileage with new filter.

According to http://www.filterminder.com a filter can and usually lasts over 60,000 miles!! Of course you would use one of their meters to monitor the filter lifespan.

"""A dirty air filter. Our tests show that driving with a dirty air filter no longer has any impact on fuel economy, as it did with older engines. That's because modern engines use computers to precisely control the air/fuel ratio, depending on the amount of air coming in through the filter. Reducing airflow causes the engine to automatically reduce the amount of fuel being used. Fuel economy didn't change, but the Camry accelerated much more slowly with a dirty filter."""

Thank you all for your imputs. For my sake I just went ahead and replaced my Camry's filter with a new orange box air filter. That way I have peace of mind. So far I feel a slight improvement in acceleration and will see if my MPG increases a little to be noticed.

LT4 Vette,

Thank you for your comment. Now I'm looking into swaping out my Durango air filter but so far all I saw was Purolator brands. Is their a big difference in the standard compared to the Pure One version??? The standard was about 9 bucks and the Pure One is about 15. Is the Pure that much better???

If it was my car, I would just use the regular Purolator air filter.

AutoZone has Fram air filters, they also carry STP filters which is another high quality (low cost) option.

LT4 Vette,

Thanks for the advice. I too now think using the regular this time around is the more prudent way to go. I'll check our Auto Zone also for Fram and STP.
