how long you typically keep your car

I've had the GN since I was 17 and I'm 31 now. I've dumped more money into it than it will ever be worth and I plan to keep it until the end.

Acura will be kept until it becomes unreliable. I'm shooting for over 200K.

we had a sentra that we cept for 10 years.
cavalier that we will kepp for more years to come and we have it for 12 years already.

Well the current plan is the Ranger 20-30 years fairly sure that will happen, Escape 10 years but I may trade it fairly soon due to being cheap and it's gas mileage, the Aspire till rust gets it that could be 10 years at least.

I have only been a licensed driver since 2004. The longest I have kept a vehicle is 3.5 years for my first Ranger. I kept my Explorer for just 6 months, but that was due to it having more rust than I could take on without taking it to a shop. This current Ranger? Who knows. It is the nicest vehicle I have owned so far, it seems to work well in Charlotte driving. Gas mileage and range is also good.

I go on the buy new and keep it until it's way obsolete. Aside from a beater Taurus that I fixed up for my oldest daughter, that's the way we've done it for about 20 years.

86 Tempo - given away
92 Caravan - stolen this year
99 Wrangler - 139k
02 Wrangler - 70k

We don't plan on buying anything else. It looks like it may pay at some point to get a better fuel squeezer, but I think some beater Neon would work for the wife's 50 mpd commute. I can get a bike ...maybe.

I've found that I like to keep my car until it's 17 years old, at which time it will be disposed of by someone else plowing into it at high speed. So I expect to be seriously injured in my Mazda sometime after 2020.

I like your answer bro. But I still hate you for having 2 Wrangler when I want but have none.

I bought my 04 Civic in 04 and by April I would have had it for 3.5 years. By then it should have 36k. I plan on driving it until it can't perform its duties for any unrepairable reason. And I might keep it around just because it's my first car even if it doesn't run. I figure by the time the engine dies then it won't be worth anything anyways but it'll have sentimental value.

I bought a 97 honda civic new, had it for 5 years then traded it in for my Tacoma. I plan on keeping it for at least another 7 years or so. The wife has a 97 Jetta 2.0L, runs great...we may look into another car like a Honda CRV in the next few years or so but we plan on keeping the Jetta.

Up until now it only made sense(financially) to run a car until it dies. But in the next 5-10 years it looks like the automotive world is going to change big time, especially keeping in mind rising gas prices. To me it doesn't make sense to lock your investment into something that will become obsolete (or unaffordable due to high gas prices) in less than 5 years.
I'd tread cautiously if I had to buy a new car today.

My guess is 8-10 years. My last car(civic) was 9yrs/225,000 sold in 1 hour of a whim decision as I decided I was sick of it. My surprised wife had to drop me off at Subaru dealership and I plunked $21k cash for a brand new 2004 Subaru WRX wagon.

I am guessing another period of 8-10 years(at 4 yrs now).

Heh heh, I stick to the same make and model. Retirees become parts for the runners. I did this with bugs for 20 yrs. Grand Wags for 15 yrs, and am presently doing it with BMW 528es

ex7ctly. too bad you have too much common sense to speak for americans.

I was planning on handing my 2003 VW to my niece in 2010, when she gets her license. But now it looks more like I'll be keeping it, maybe look for a replacement when it gets up to about 700k miles or so. Should be around 2014 or so. (Assuming it doesn't get totaled in an accident)

I buy used but relatively new cars (2-3 years old), drive for 5 years or so and then sell it. That way we always have cars that are not obsolete but don't cost an arm and a leg to buy.

do you think a VW can last 700k? i almost got a 99k miles VW Passat wagon w/ a turbo engine. i looked and drove very well but i wasn't sure how expensive it would be to maintain a turbo engine VW so i passed on it. the price was right as well, 4k for a 1999 model. i guess my lack of knowledge of european cars and the typical mentality that they're meant for non-DIY owners have consistently steered me away from them. i may take a shop class or get a part time gig at the local lube joint to learn about them.
