How long will this engine last?

good comment '92: my wife's '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee is at 171,000 miles and is on its fourth radiator!

replaced at 98,000, 118,000, and now at 170,000 miles!

Mobil 1 throughout period. Purchased car off lease at 22,000 miles and two years old, and have performed 31 oil changes over the 149,000 miles

yes, overkill, just went to FL1A oversize filter.

Pitbull if you are going to trade it at 80,000 miles you might as well just run regular oil! Chevron Supreme or Havoline! 3000-5000 miles oil change interval and you will be good to go!

I'd go out on a limb and say that you are no better off with synthetic than conventional based on the simple fact that under normal driving conditions the engine oil temperature will stay below 305-F

Secondly, since the engine probably has roller based friction devices for valves then synthetic is mute.

If you change your oil every 5K your motor wlll last upwards to 200K miles. If you elect to use synthetic and incurr added expense then you will likely see roughly the same outlook.

If your engine is for racing or suffering extreme use, or need viscosity / cranking ability in say -40 then synthetic will aid in that arena.

General everyday use, newer engine, good car and maintenance....I'd save the money, and use a good GF-4 conventional oil and take the wife out to a nice resturuant for dinner......

Pitbull, where do you live? i have the exact same engine in my truck (2002 tundra), and here in the south i basically use (roughly speaking) 5qts of 10w30 and 2qts of 15w50 (both mobil 1).

This engine will last 200K-300K or perhaps i should just say well beyond your desire to keep it.

Once a year i drain 4 qts of atf and re-fill with a synthetic atf. I also occasionally siphon from the power steering reservoir and re-fill also with a synthetic atf. At 30K miles i will dump my rear differential and re-fill with redline gear lube.

I should note i also had a camaro that got to 250K miles before i gave it (still running fine) to my brother. for that one, i used mobil 1 and castrol syntec using (roughly) a 3K oci. My dodge intrepid got to 170K before i traded it in to buy the truck, same oils and oci.

If I knew for a fact that I would no longer own the truck at 80K miles I would fill with supertech synthetic and change at 10-15K miles.

OK...I've resisted putting in my 2¢ worth for as long as I can stand it...that engine, if well taken care of, will last 262,345.6 miles before needing an overhaul...write it down.

Here's the proper formula for determining the life of that particular engine:

Take some dice. Roll them for a number. Then add your age to that number, multiply by the number for pi, divide by the natural number e, if your in a Blue state add one, otherwise add two, now multiply all that by 6,666.

Toyota makes the best long lasting, endurable engine in my opionion, i see 67 toyota celica driving around by old men that never do oil changes and never take care of there cars. I know of a guy. he says he just adds oil when its shorts. never maintenance it because he figure the engine will die. but he still passes smog and the car runs fine

Depends upon what kind of driving you are going to be doing. All freeway with high mile trips or short 2 miles to work then 2 miles home will give vastly different results. I would say the engine will last long enough given fair maintenance.
