- I did read the part at the top of the page that you do not disclose [proprietary] stuff, but I recently caught the TV spot that states that Mobil 1 protected an engine to the extent that almost no engine wear was found in a new vehicle after 200,000 miles. Upon what research was this claim based? I am also curious about how this study compares to some of Amsoil’s claims that it outperforms Mobil 1 in a series of tests, i.e., would Amsoil’s oils have prevented more wear than Mobil 1 would have? Finally, the ad begs the question of how long an average engine will go till it fails on Mobil 1 – 250,000 miles? 300,000? 350,000? 400,000?

A - How about 1 million miles? More on that in a moment, but first let’s address your question about testing. Mobil 1 formulations undergo what we believe are the most intensive and extensive testing of any motor oil. Many of the tests to meet industry standards—API, ILSAC, ACEA and others, are “laboratory” tests, using clearly specified equipment and procedures. In addition to these tests, Mobil 1 also meets and exceeds many global engine-builder specifications. These tests are also conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, but they usually involve a specific manufacturer’s engines or drivetrain components. In recent years, ExxonMobil has conducted two long-term tests with Mobil 1 – one for 200,000 miles with engines on a test bed, and another for over 1 million miles using a popular European sedan. The 200,000-mile test used two identical domestic four-cylinder engines, one using Mobil 1 and the other a premium conventional oil. At the end of the test, the engines were torn down and examined. The engine run with conventional oil had higher wear rates and significant deposits, while the Mobil 1 engine was virtually clean. What’s more, consumption of the conventional oil was eight times higher than with Mobil 1. The 1-million-mile test involved a car on an outdoor dynamometer running through a start-stop, low-speed/high-speed protocol more or less 24 hours a day. Oil drain intervals were 7,500 miles, the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer. At the end of the test, with 1,001,120 miles on the vehicle, the engine was removed and disassembled. Overall engine wear was extremely light. In fact, with the exception of light-to-moderate wear on the camshaft and followers, no other significant engine wear was noted. And oil consumption over the entire test was just .040 quarts per 1,000 miles. So, how long will an engine last until it fails on Mobil 1? It’s safe to say that no one knows!
 
I had an old Ford pickup with 300 inline 6. The motor had over 300,000 miles on it. It was an old Coke Truck. The engine had its oil changed every 3000 miles with probably valvoline or mobil drive clean. The rest of the truck was falling apart and getting rusty. The engine ran like new yet. I sold it for $400 bucks. It really depends on where you live and how long you want to keep the vehicle. I currently am running mobil 1 5w30 in my 91 Mustang GT, which has had Mobil 1 since new. It has 150,000 miles on it and driven hard. I am not a firm beleaver in synthetics but I am trying them for the first time after just buy this mustang. I have some German Castrol that I am going to run for 6000 miles in my truck this winter. All in all it probably depends on the cituation weather to run synthetic or not. Maybe just so you can get some sleep at night.
 
It would be interesting to know which domestic 4-cylinders were used and the type and grade of each oil used and oci. Also which grade M1 on the Euro car?
 
The engine will probably last far longer than before you grow tired of the car. But then if you use good conventional oil and change it often enough the einge will still last long enough that you will grow tired of the car.

Well it is a test, and one that Amsoil or any other company has yet to duplicate. For those that don't think it's real world enough, are any of Amsoil's tests real world? Amsoil IMO relies too much on bench testing and lab testing. I'll say this though, I'm sure Oil Analyzers gives them a good amount of data feed back of how their oils are holding up.

Mobil should have answered the question more directly towards Amsoil bc the main test Amsoil promotes is the 4-ball wear, which as far as I'm concerned, is MEANINGLESS. M1 and Amsoil are so close spec wise it becomes ridiculous to even compare them. Ooooohh, your little Amsoil flows down to -60F compared to Mobil 1 at -57F. I'm sure that difference is signficant. NOT.

The car was supposedly a late `80's 3 series BMW. Why do they say "we did 7500 mi. OCI's...the maximum permitted by the manuf.".

I thought it was at least 10k OCI's on these BMW's.
 
have a 97 4.6L F-150 (Ford) that's been on Mobil 1 10W30 for over 225,000 miles...compression to each cylinder is still gravey!
 
I'm not a big fan of Amsoil's advertising methods, however, they publish several (real) real world tests with their products in over the road vehicles.

They were Oldsmobiles.

All of these runs were made with 5w30 Mobil 1 from current production at the time.

If I recall correctly, these tests were concluded in 1991.

There were two Oldsmobiles wtih Quad 4s, and two BMW 325s.

The cars were run using what was at the time the standard course and speed cycling. Two were operated with 7,500 mile oil changes, and the other two with 15,000 mile oil changes.

Other routine maintenace was done. Over 150 critical motor parts remained within specifications on all four cars. The oil pans and passageways were clean and did not have sludge, tar, or varnish. Basically the engines were clean and free of any measureable wear.

There was also a 1,000,000 mile test run with basically the same results.

As with Consumer Reports' taxi test a few years later, the test did not involve thermal cycling, allowing cars to become completely cool and doing cold starts.

If you don't otherwise abuse the vehicle and perform regular maintainence, you should find your engine outlasts the rest of the car using Mobil 1 of an appropriate viscosity with a filter that meets OEM efficiency and capacity specs.

I don't know of any top dino seller's that would every recommend this interval. Not sure what product mis-application proves.

That brings up a good question, everywhere I go it seems everyone has new cars. I mean everywhere !!! I guess automakers have made it easy with low cost financing. I keep cars for roughly 10 years, although I'll be going for 15 with this car. I'm probably one of the only people who actually buys a car with cash, I like to buy a car with at least 50,000 miles on it. By that point it seems that most of the depriciation has already happened. I'm taking all the money most people spend on new car payments and investing it. I'm hoping to have a Ferrari beafore I turn 40, but I doubt that after saving that long I could actually convince myself to pull the trigger. And FWIW I use AMsoil in my motorcycle and car.
 
You are not the only weird person on this site.

A 2000 BMW 750iL was a $93,000 car. A clean 65,000 mi example can currently be bought for $25,000.

1. In most cases used cars are a much better value.

The car Mobil used for the 1 million mile test was a BMW 325i, E30 chassis. The engine (M20) is a great design, in fact my mechanic (a BMW mechanic) drives one with 373,000 hard miles on it (on Castrol 20w-50 most of its life).

In general, I agree with this...but if you have the cash to buy the car outright, and can score a good interest rate, it might make more sense to invest the money in a security that you have reasonable confidence will beat the interest rate on your loan.

Of course, you need to have some tolerance for risk with this plan!

I have a Prelude with an H22A4 that recently under went sometop half engine wear.

The mechanic, one of the best specialist you can get, indicated that the top half and the oil pan were perfectly clean and free of slude.

At 120,000 miles that's not a bad endorsement of synthetic products. The engine has mostly had Mobil 1 over the years, with some AMSOIL and Redline in there too.
