How long to run Maxlife Synthetic?

While the Maxlife Synthetic is probably good for 5000 to 6000 miles, I think an oil change with Maxlife Synthetic before every long trip makes the most sense.

I also think adding 6 ounces of ARX to the next oil change might be worthwhile.

Regular Maxlife is good for 5000, so the synthetic should be good for at least 7000. Must remember though that it is mainly Group III. Okay, you all have convinced me that I should not try to go 9 to 10K with it. I'll probably change it out just before the next trip. May save for another vehicle though, depending on how it looks by then (Sept/Oct).

With only 14,000 miles, I don't plan on AutoRx. Did boost the zddp to 1200 zinc though.

Just change it! You'll sleep better. I promise I won't tell Al Gore

I agree. Just change it.

7k, I'll agree too. I would NOT run this oil for 10k in a heavy 454 - just my opinion, though.

If you want to do 9-12k mile runs, I'd personally be using Rotella synthetic 5w-40, this oil can easily do this mileage.

Tall Paul dont take that formula as gospel. Its just a starting point. As you have pointed out oil varies in quality a good bit and some engines are harder on oil than others.

For instance Castrol Syntec 5W-40 GIII or Valvoline Syntec Euro 5W-40 likely would last a lot longer than SuperTech.

And Schaeffers 7000 would likely outlast Motorcraft Synthetic Blend.

... and then you have to take certain engines with known issues like DC 2.7L DOHC V-6, Audi 1.8T, and Saab 2.3T and adjust....

Right. The big V8 in a 12,000 pound motorhome beating up mountain roads is going to be hard on the oil. Book says to change every 3000 miles. If I run it 5 to 7 K that is great. I guess my biggest problem is my trip length falls short of the ideal 7K. Could run regular Maxlife for the 4-5K runs, but no, I want synthetic only in this engine. I may save the drainoff and run it in either my pickup or the Aerostar for a couple K. No harm to sitting it on the shelf, so long as it was drained after a good run and not full of acid.

If you think changing oil on that tub is a PIA...wait till you have to change an engine. I run all oil 5000 max no mater what it is. Just cheap insurance. In 7.4L GM engines I would only run a 40w or 50w. You should probably consider a HDEO or 20w50 for Summertime in that boat.

Oil change is easy on this rig. Just don't want to do it on the road, esp the filter which is the dirty part. Fumoto makes the rest a piece of cake.

Now why do you suggest 40 and 50 weight oil for this engine. I had two Ford 460 V8s and they ran just fine on 10w30 getting 55 and 65 psi hot at speed. This 454 shows 57 psi on the road and I think it is limited by the pump bypass valve. If I put 40 or 50 wt in it will not show more psi and will flow slower. Manufacturer specifies 5w30 and allows 10w30. I have no problem going outside that range, but don't see good reason to.
