how long does it take you to change your oil?

25 min. If I go faster I spill used oil somewhere and need to take time to clean it up.

This includes driving on/off the ramps, gloves on/off, and draining the old oil into a gallon jug.

I don't check any lights, briefly check antifreeze and obvious issues, and don't check the dipstick until a week later. Just pour in the usual amount.

Can do it in 10 mins, particularly the Nissan, as I can nearly walk under it.

Don't do it that fast usually, as I enjoy being outside and wrenching. If it "needed" to be that fast, I'd do it another day.

I changed the diff oil in the Nissan a few months ago in 10 mins, in PJS, in -7 frost, before work...Mrs was laughing at the time, but it "needed" changing.

5-10 minutes on the 2 Foresters.

- Pull the filter, check gasket
- Remove the plug
- Let drain and install new filter
- Reinstall the plug
- Add oil
- Start it, check for leaks
- Dump used oil back into 5qt jug, place used filter in funnel on 5 gallon jerry can to drain out until the next change.

Only ever had one oil change take longer then a hour(with breaks). That was when the can of the filter ON THE CAR broke loose and spun from the base plate of the filter. No room to get in with a band wrench, pliers, hammer/chisel. Ended up making a home made spanner wrench out of a 3" piece of band iron. 2 bolts threaded through to line up with the holes in the base plate(after ripping the can off) and a bolt threaded through in the center of the band iron and welded on the back side allowing the use of a socket on the head to turn every thing. Total time was about 2 hours.

I never walk away from an oil change. I have seen to many people either forget about it and dry start the engine because they never finished or have some one else dry start it because they wanted to leave, needed to move cars...... Leaving a few onces of old oil in there isn't worth the risk to me.

If I must walk away from some thing that shouldn't be started I place a piece of duct tape over the ignition switch with a note. A habit that comes from an old shop.

30-45 minutes per car, depending. From the collection of the supplies to dumping of used oil. The little things add up.

Good practice. Years ago, we started this practice at the garage I worked at, the sign went on the steering wheel and read "NO BRAKES". Don't worry, no one was hurt in the incident, but the workbench shop vice did suffer a minor injury.

I'd say 1/2 hour for a quick oil change, 1 hour for a leisurely oil change, probably 45 minutes average.

It usually ends up taking me a couple hours, but I pretty much always end up rotating the tires at the same time on our DDs. Quicker on the truck since it doesn't get tire rotations and doesn't need to be jacked up. But by the time I:

- Roll the car onto plywood to get a little clearance.
- Jack the front up and put it on stands.
- Remove the splash shield.
- Drain the oil.
- Lift the rear onto stands and rotate the tires. Check suspension and brakes while the tires are off.
- Put the drain plug back in.
- Change the filter.
- Look over CV joints, etc.
- Lower the car.
- Fill the oil, run the car, and check for leaks.
- Clean up.

usually a couple hours has gone by at least.

Oil change alone with ramps instead of jack stands would be quicker of course, but I pretty much never do that.

About 20 minutes.

My entire process consists of getting the drain pan, ramps, and wrench, and hauling them out to my apartment parking stall. Then driving the car up the ramps, removing drain plug, and letting it drain for a couple minutes. Then plug goes back on, i change the filter, and refill the oil. Then off the ramps, check the oil again, drain the drain pan into a 5 gallon bucket, then take it all back inside and put it away.

I could shave AT LEAST 5 minutes off of that if i had a garage

My Car is too low so I have to jack it up, I like it level so I jack all corners. Now I have 15 10mm Bolts to get off so I can access my pan and filter.

This is about 15-30min in depending how fast I am going.

I generally take my time and just try to enjoy it all rather than rush.

Drain bolt, wait for it to slow then take filter out. Re bolt pan, put oil filter on, fill the car up. Check for leaks quickly. Bolt it back up lower it. Done.

1-1.5 hours depending

This.. and i might drink a beer while im waiting for the drip to slow..
ALSO: I dont get teh guys that wait for there to be no drip at all, you guys do realize just how much oil is left in the block ect that doesnt drain.. that extra 20 minutes and 2 tsp of oil that come out doesnt seem worth the wait for me.. when the drip slows (normal within 5 minutes) the plugs going back in and im moving on.

I have to jack up the car, put in the jackstands, crawl under, remove drain plug and filter, wiggle a little further under to check and clean filter mounting surface, jack car back up a bit, remove jackstands, lower car back to level (a bit more oil will come out) have a cup of coffee, jack back up, re-set jackstands, install new filter and re-install drain plug, refill with fresh oil, start and check for leaks, shut off, jack back up a little bit, remove jackstands, lower the car, and clean and store my tools.

So, maybe an hour? Less if the coffee is already made.

To change both oil and filter in my truck it takes me less than 10 minutes, but in the E320 it takes me longer since I need to raise the vehicle and remove the plastic pan underneath. Usually about half hour, but I am old.

If you have a fluid extractor, you don't need to raise the car to remove any panel to gain access to the drain plug.

Change oil and filter in a MB engine is as easy as change air filter if you have the right tools.
