How good is "low cost auto ins." from state?

We had State Farm for many years before switching to Geico because of cost. State Farm is a reputable company and has to follow the insurance rules of your state like every other auto insurance company.

The key thing with any auto policy is that the coverage amounts are enough to protect you financially. When we had State Farm they would not sell you a policy with state minimum amounts. I believe $100,000 liability was their minimum. Like the ad says you still get a State Farm agent and as long as you are comfortable with the coverage amounts they should be fine.

Also be careful when selecting the property damage coverage. It's one thing to be at fault when the other guy totals his Camry or Accord. It's another when you wipe out a $70,000 BMW and take out a couple of light poles to boot.

+1 I am in the process of shopping for a new company due to this. I have been with State Farm for 30+ years, but they have priced themselves out of the market in Houston (at least for me). I have a good driving record/no homeowner claims and have had no incidents. Just in cursory shopping, State Farm is $1000+ more annually than similar companies.

Are you asking about mylowcostauto.com ?

It is good only if you absolutely can not afford a regular insurance policy.

Be aware that mylowcostauto.com has coverage that is much lower than the amount normally recommend by insurance companies.

California's Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program (CLCA) allows low income residents ( Max $27,225/yr ) to buy cheap insurance with very little coverage ($10,000 in bodily injury per person, $20,000 per accident, $3,000 in property damage)

It is also lower than the normal CA state requirement. ($15,000/$30,000/$5,000)

For comparison, CT minimum is $20,000/$40,000, but the "recommended" for someone that owns a house is $100,000/$300,000 coverage.

We had State Farm and could not figure out why it was so high until we really checked our policy and found the agent had made it an umbrella policy and added our ex son-in-law, new son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law that did not drive and our son. They had their own policies but to get a better rate for them he made our policy an umbrella policy and we took a hit for their bad driving habits. When we ask why he did not ask us first he said "well I knew you would want to help your children get better rates". We cancelled the policy and we had our house, cars, and business with him. The rate with another company was a lot cheaper.

Be very careful as to what is added to your policy. Make sure the limits are what you want also. Remember you are the boss when purchasing insurance, homes, and cars.

Having the exact same issue with AAA. Great service, but my rates just went up nearly 400 bucks with the same policy!

Just called one company (progressive), and it was another 450 higher than that!

I also found out why Geico and Progressive seems to be much cheaper for others but not me.

They apparently count no point offenses like driving using cell phone as violation, when AAA does not.

I also found that bundling home and auto isn't always the cheapest. I end up buying home with Allied / Nationwide and auto with AAA.

I don't know if you can also get Fred Loya ins. in your state, but my premium is 256.00 for 6 months, 2 cars,2 drivers, liability only.Older cars not worth full coverage.

I got on price with car insurance (Progressive for me) but drive older vehicles (5+years) so body work although not perfect is fine for age.

Brand new cars I would be more sensitive to it. State Farm not a good rep in home insurance industry not sure of cars.
